Users can expect major features such as high-speed connections for both uploads and downloads, as well as the ability to run unlimited simultaneous connections to global servers.

In this Private Internet Access review, I’ll cover why this service is considered one of the best VPNs on the market in 2026.

Despite its significant market share, it may not be the ideal VPN for all streaming entertainment users.

1. Strong Customer Support Available 24/7

Right off the top, PIA has a formidable customer support resource page.

Their extensive Knowledge Base articles, troubleshooting FAQ lists, and how-to guides provide users with comprehensive support to address most questions and issues. Both prospective and existing users have full access to this wealth of resources. Additionally, paying customers receive access to 24/7 Live Chat functionality from support agents.

PIA has significantly improved its customer support since our last review. The Live Chat support is now truly available around the clock, and response times are quick and helpful. The support team is knowledgeable and can assist with technical issues, account questions, and general inquiries about the service.

For those who prefer self-help options, PIA’s Community forum is a great resource where users can share experiences, troubleshooting tips, and request new features or server locations.

 

 

2. Speed Remains Strong Behind VPN (Especially in the US)

There’s no point using a VPN if it strangles your speeds to the point that your internet connection is unusable. To that end, we’ve tested PIA’s network performance across a global range of servers to confirm that their server speeds are as good as we’d expect. The headline is that PIA passed with flying colors, performing well across the world and offering better speeds in Asia than some of its competitors. We used the WireGuard protocol for our tests, as it usually delivers the best speeds.

Before starting the speed test, we used a default connection to our ISP without the VPN as a baseline to test the bandwidth. Here’s that result:

As seen here, the highest speeds were recorded from U.S. servers. Upload speeds remained consistent across regions, while download speeds varied more significantly in locations outside North America, with some drop in Asian servers. However, speeds are still more than adequate for 4K streaming and other bandwidth-intensive activities.

3. Usability: Easy To Find Everything in Clean Interface

The interface throughout the app itself is very easy to download, to follow instructions on each screen during the setup, and to use.

Installation

One-click Installation: Simply executing the downloaded file begins the installation of the VPN.

Start Using Right Away: Once installed, the login screen appears automatically. Alternatively, you can take a quick tour of the app before you begin to use it.

First Glance

Once logged in, the app pops up as a clean, small window with simple instructions to turn on the VPN and to select a server.

Clicking the right arrow next to the current server will show the available server list. Servers are cleanly organized with their corresponding latency shown to the right.

In-App Features

Clicking on the bottom arrow reveals the full interface of the app. This includes features such as Quick Connect by country, the Performance graph and usage details, Quick Settings such as Mace and Port Forwarding, current subscription details, and a VPN Snooze feature.

VPN Snooze

Snooze temporarily disconnects the VPN and automatically reconnects when the timer elapses after a specified period. This is helpful when you are away from your device for a short time.

Settings

The Settings section contains numerous customization options, allowing for a highly personalized VPN experience.

Users can make basic changes to the theme, style, appearance, language, notifications, and whether to command the app to launch and connect upon system startup.

Here’s where you’re shown account details such as username and subscription details. From this window, you are able to manage your account, switch accounts, or log out.

This is where the Kill Switch button lives, along with the Mace feature, which blocks any domains being used for ads, trackers, and malware.

From this screen, I can configure DNS, request port forwarding, and allow LAN traffic. In addition, I have the option to use a beta feature labeled “App Exclusions”, which basically whitelists apps that users can manually add to bypass the VPN and connect directly to the Internet.

PIA now supports both OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols, providing options for different security and speed preferences. The Connection settings allow you to configure encryption levels, from maximum protection to speed-optimized settings.

Settings – Proxy

This includes Shadowsocks and SOCKS5 Proxy options, which are particularly useful for torrenting and bypassing censorship in restrictive regions.

The Support Portal link is located here, as well as a few general maintenance features such as reinstalling the network adapter, split tunnel filter, and uninstalling the VPN.

7. Reliable Kill Switch Protection

From time to time, Internet connections time out, and this timeout period leaves your IP address vulnerable to tracking activities. PIA’s app allows users to set up a fail-safe to ensure they remain private and anonymous while online.

I tested this feature by setting the kill switch to “Always”.

Disabling the connection on the VPN triggered the kill switch and shut off my Internet connection. Switching between servers also disabled my connection in the interim.

This easy to find and easy to use kill switch feature provides you with the confidence of knowing the app will automatically keep your connection safe.

8. No Leaks Detected During Testing

One of the most important aspects of any VPN is its ability to hide your home IP when you’re browsing the internet. That’s why we’ve put together a barrage of tests to make sure that PIA’s privacy features are up to scratch.

When you connect to PIA, all of your internet traffic is sent through an encrypted tunnel which scrambles it in transit, making sure that your ISP can’t snoop on your browsing habits. It also has the handy upside of keeping your data private from anyone else on the same local network, so you can browse without being worried about hackers lurking on public Wi-Fi when you connect from a coffee shop or airport.

First up, we tested PIA’s DNS routing to make sure there’s no leaks. As you can see from our IPLeak.net results, PIA worked perfectly.

Instead of displaying our testing rig IP, IPLeak displayed the VPN IP. However, there’s one slight issue with the test that you’ll notice if you look at the IPv6 IP.

 

PIA does not route IPv6 traffic. This is because it’s notorious for causing leaks even when using a VPN, so PIA have chosen to disable it entirely to protect your privacy. If you need a VPN that routes IPv6, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Next up, we tried out BrowserLeaks.com to see if PIA has any WebRTC leaks. Like IPv6, WebRTC is one of the common areas where VPN safety falls down, so it’s important to see if a provider is actually protecting against WebRTC leaks. Thankfully, PIA doesn’t leak through WebRTC as you can see below.

Finally, we checked to see whether PIA has any obfuscation features present for hiding the fact you’re using a VPN from you network admin or ISP. PIA actually bundles Multi-hop and obfuscation in one single feature, so you’ll need to pick the server you want to route your traffic through first before your final destination if you want to use obfuscation. You’re also locked in to only using OpenVPN.

 

Just to do our due diligence, we’ve also put the PIA installer through VirusTotal.com and found that the installer contains no viruses.

9. TOR Network and P2P/Torrenting Support

TOR Network

With PIA, users can easily access the TOR network, although using both services together may impact speed due to the multiple layers of encryption.

While their support can’t offer direct assistance (due to unsupported third-party software and devices), PIA provides helpful documentation on how to access and use the TOR network with their VPN. It’s important to remember to launch the PIA VPN first before running the TOR browser.

P2P/Torrenting

PIA is one of the best VPNs for torrenting, supporting P2P traffic on all servers across its 91-country network. The service includes valuable features like port forwarding, which can help boost download speeds by 10-15%, and SOCKS5 proxy support.

PIA works well with popular torrent clients like qBittorrent, BitTorrent, and Vuze. Torrenting is fully supported with the default settings of the desktop application.

10. Multi-Hop and Obfuscation Features

PIA now offers a Multi-Hop feature, which routes your traffic through two VPN servers for an extra layer of encryption and privacy. This is especially useful for users in countries with heavy internet censorship or those who require maximum anonymity.

The obfuscation feature makes your VPN traffic look like regular encrypted web traffic, helping to bypass network restrictions or VPN blocks. PIA implements this through Shadowsocks servers available in several countries including the US, UK, Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada, and Japan.

While using these features may reduce speeds slightly due to the additional encryption layers, they provide significant privacy and anti-censorship benefits for users who need them.

11. Advanced Split Tunneling Options

PIA’s split tunneling feature has been enhanced with additional customization options. Users can now specify which apps, IP addresses, or websites bypass the VPN tunnel, providing exceptional flexibility for balancing security with convenience.

This feature is particularly useful for accessing banking websites (which often block VPN connections) while keeping the rest of your traffic encrypted, or for optimizing streaming performance on specific applications.

12. Strong Streaming Support

PIA’s streaming support is much better than it used to be, but you may have to jump to one of their dedicated streaming servers in order to get access to the content you want. We’ve tried out a bunch of different streaming services using PIA to see which ones it unblocks, and for the most part it’s pretty seamless with a few notable exceptions.

First up, we gave BBC iPlayer a shot on PIA’s UK servers. No issues here, as it worked first time and we were able to tune into Killing Eve.

We swapped over to PIA’s US servers to watch something on Disney Plus, and this is where we ran into our first problem. Despite bouncing between several different US locations including PIA’s dedicated US East streaming server, we weren’t able to access Disney Plus. Your mileage may vary, but it’s a little disappointing considering several of PIA’s competitors handle Disney Plus with no problem.

Thankfully, PIA’s performance on Netflix is far more in line with what we’d expect from a top VPN. Jumping onto Netflix’s DE service using one of PIA’s servers in Germany meant we were able to access and stream Emily en Paris with no slowdown or buffering.

It’s the same story for Netflix JP. All we had to do was change to PIA’s Japan servers and Netflix let us stream The Good Place from their JP library.

Given that BBC iPlayer worked perfectly, we expected it to be the same case with Netflix’s UK library and PIA didn’t disappoint.

With most of Netflix’s major libraries out of the way, the last one we needed to test was Netflix US. In this case, PIA worked first time without needing to jump between US locations or access their dedicated streaming servers in the US.

Netflix isn’t the only US service PIA can unblock, either. We headed over to HBO Max to see if PIA would work, and yet again PIA unblocked the service first time, allowing us to stream Euphoria.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Amazon Prime Video, where we could log in with ease but couldn’t stream content without disconnecting the VPN.

Last up, Paramount Plus. As with Disney Plus and Amazon Prime, we weren’t able to stream any content from Paramount Plus despite changing servers multiple times.

So, all in all, PIA is a slightly mixed bag when it comes to streaming. We’ve definitely seen better performance out of other providers like ExpressVPN and NordVPN, but on the plus side Netflix is getting increasingly tougher on VPNs and PIA can still access Netflix libraries flawlessly.

While PIA has improved its streaming capabilities, it requires the use of specialized streaming servers to access services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and others. When connecting to regular servers, streaming platforms may detect and block the VPN connection.

These specialized streaming servers are available in 11 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, and Canada, and are configured to refresh their IP addresses frequently to avoid detection by streaming platforms.

While this solution works effectively, it does limit users to specific server locations for streaming purposes, which may impact speed or convenience depending on your physical location.

2. US Jurisdiction (14-Eyes Country)

Having headquarters in Denver, Colorado, U.S., places PIA under the jurisdiction of a 14-Eyes country, which could potentially compromise user anonymity if served with legal requests for data.

However, PIA maintains that their strict no-logs policy makes this a non-issue, as they simply don’t have user data to share even if legally compelled. Their no-logs policy has been tested in court cases where PIA was unable to provide user data despite legal requests. The company continues to emphasize their commitment to user privacy regardless of jurisdiction.

3. Desktop App Interface Could Use Refinement

While functional and feature-rich, the PIA desktop application’s interface could benefit from a more modern design and layout. Some users may find the separate windows for settings and the main interface less intuitive than the single-window designs offered by competitors.

Navigation between different settings menus requires multiple clicks, and the overall experience, while comprehensive, isn’t as streamlined as it could be. However, the mobile apps are generally more polished and user-friendly.
