IPVanish is a great choice if you need a cheaper VPN with unlimited device support and don’t mind your VPN provider being hosted in the US. The iOS app is straightforward without unnecessary complexity. Not the most pleasant looking app we’ve ever seen, but it gets the job done.

There’s a few small extras available on IPVanish that are worth shouting out. Under “Security Tools” you’ll find a URL and QR code checker, which is kind of handy if you’re busy and need to check a link sent to you by email. It’s probably rare you’ll use it in practice, but it’s better to have it and not need it. IPVanish does also offer split tunnelling, but on iOS you’re just picking out the domains that you can connect to without a VPN active. There’s no support for individual apps.

As for servers, IPVanish offers 3,200 servers across 74 locations. Certainly not as expansive as some of the top-tier providers we’ve covered, but certainly above average.

There’s a few extra tricks you can try to get the most out of your VPN’s performance on iOS:

• Connect to nearby servers first: You might find that connecting to far away servers impacts your speed, especially if you’re trying to take a video call. Most of the time, we found that just hitting “Quick Connect” got us a relatively nearby server, but at least once Proton VPN connected us to a server one country over. So, double-check and make sure you’re on the nearest server if you need a speed boost.
• Enable “Connect on Demand” in iOS Settings: Most people miss this step completely, but enabling it allows your VPN app to automatically connect for you. Go to Settings → VPN & Device Management → VPN → [Your VPN] → Connect On Demand. This ensures your VPN reconnects automatically if the connection drops while switching between WiFi and cellular data.
• Use WireGuard protocol when available: OpenVPN will chew through your battery if you have your VPN left on all the time.
