Three things stand out. IPVanish kept the most bandwidth – 96.3% of baseline – and added only 5 ms of latency, which suggests a Sydney endpoint sitting practically next to the test server. The top three landed within a single percentage point of each other, so on raw throughput you can’t pick wrong between IPVanish, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN. And the slowest run of the day, Proton VPN on a server reporting 56% load, still held 89.6% of baseline – comfortably enough for 4K streaming.

Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections – not 5, not 10, unlimited – for as little as A$3.49/month on long-term plans. That’s unbeatable value for Australian families drowning in devices.
However, it’s the performance that most surprised me. In our long-distance test set, Surfshark averaged a 9.09% speed drop versus baseline, which is excellent. The August 2026 Sydney run backs the lab numbers up: 82.85 Mbps of a 90.12 Mbps baseline (91.9% retained) through Surfshark’s Sydney location.
The CleanWeb ad blocker actually works well on Australian news sites, which tend to be particularly aggressive with advertising.
Streaming performance was almost perfect with Surfshark successfully accessing Netflix US/UK/DE/JP, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and other major platforms. With servers covering five Australian cities, you’ll have plenty of options for accessing Australian platforms too. We were able to unblock both 9Now and ABC iView but Surfshark did have trouble with SBS On Demand.

Swiss privacy laws. That’s the headline here. Proton VPN operates under some of the world’s strongest data protection regulations, which matters when you’re dealing with Australia’s Five Eyes intelligence sharing arrangements. The 20,500 server network across 127 locations – including 300+ servers across five cities in Australia – provides plenty of flexibility, and Securitum’s 2025 no-logs audit backs up their transparency claims.
In our standardized long-distance runs, Proton VPN averaged a 17.56% speed drop versus baseline. It’s not the fastest in this list, but it’s still plenty fast enough for HD streaming and stable daily browsing in most real-world setups. Sydney told a similar story in August 2026: 80.71 Mbps of a 90.12 Mbps baseline (89.6% retained) on the AU#392 server over WireGuard – the slowest of our five runs, though the server was carrying 56% load at the time.
The Secure Core architecture routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before reaching your destination, adding extra protection.
Port forwarding works well for torrenting enthusiasts while major international streaming platforms cooperated in our tests, Disney+ and Prime Video included. Unfortunately, Proton VPN failed to unblock two Australian streaming services in 9Now and SBS On Demand. It did work with ABC iView however.

ExpressVPN is very much a solid all-rounder. Its proprietary Lightway protocol delivers good speeds across 105 locations. In fact, it has Australian servers in six locations – that’s more than most rivals and improves your odds of finding a fast, local server.
The native router app makes whole-home protection simple, which matters for Australian families with smart home setups and multiple streaming devices.
In our standardized long-distance runs, ExpressVPN averaged a 17.31% speed drop versus baseline. That’s usable, but trailing our top picks. Sydney was kinder to it in August 2026: 86.12 Mbps of a 90.12 Mbps baseline, 95.6% retained and second-fastest of the five – though ping rose from 313 ms to 438 ms, the biggest latency add in the group, which matters far more for gaming than for streaming.
Streaming reliability hit a 87.5% success rate, which sounds good until you realize our top three all scored perfect marks.
Specifically, ExpressVPN struggled with Netflix UK in recent tests. However, it worked with Netflix US, Disney+, and Prime Video. It also did well with Australian platforms including 9Now, ABC iView, and SBS On Demand.
The 14 simultaneous connections limit is generous, but you’ll need the top-tier Pro plan to get it. Router support remains a standout feature if you need to protect all of your devices simultaneously.
We observed potential browser traffic leakage in one kill switch test. We’re running further tests to confirm this, but keep it in mind if you need bulletproof protection for private browsing or torrenting.
Despite some of its limitations, ExpressVPN still commands premium pricing which puts it slightly behind our top three picks. Still, its plentiful Australian server locations and router support keep it in touching distance.

IPVanish is a strong speed performer in this lineup. We averaged 220 Mbps while connected to its servers in Asia – that was faster than any other provider we tested. In our standardized long-distance runs, it averaged an 11.67% speed drop versus baseline – again, very competitive. August’s Sydney run made the case even better: 86.80 Mbps of a 90.12 Mbps baseline – 96.3% retained, the best result of the five – with ping only 5 ms above the bare route. The app listed 39 Sydney servers at 6% load when we connected, so there’s real local capacity behind that number.
The catch? Its US jurisdiction. If you’re a privacy-conscious user like me, you may not want your data being shared with Australian authorities. Having said that, IPVanish does operate a no-logs policy which was independently audited by Schellman Compliance in 2025.
At 3,400 servers, IPVanish may not have quite as big a network as NordVPN or Proton VPN, but this doesn’t seem to hurt performance. Further, it has servers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.
In my experience, torrenting is where IPVanish shines. Our IPVanish and NordVPN head-to-head tests both. Scramble obfuscation comes enabled by default across all servers, making it ideal for P2P users who need that extra layer of protection.
Streaming performance lags behind at 75% success rate. It handled Netflix UK/DE/JP, BBC iPlayer, 9Now, and SBS On Demand fine but struggled with US Netflix, Prime Video, and ABC iView.
Like Surfshark, IPVanish has an unlimited simultaneous connection allowance, making it perfectly for sharing with family at home. There are no anonymous payment options available however which may put off privacy-first users.
