Windscribe Review 2026

Canadian-based and independently-owned Windscribe has one of the most diverse city-level server selections on the market. It positions itself as a strong alternative to US-based providers and commercial VPN providers in general. To see if those claims hold up, we put the Pro version through rigorous testing on Windows OS, with macOS, iOS, and Android tests scheduled ahead.

Since our last tests, Windscribe expanded Netflix support, and its advanced firewall makes it a top-tier contender. Our current hands-on tests also reveal that speeds have improved significantly, but performance on certain long-distance routes could be better. Furthermore, for the most privacy-conscious users, the company’s headquarters in Canada remains a point of discussion.

From the powerful R.O.B.E.R.T. blocker to their flexible “Build-A-Plan” pricing, here is how Windscribe performs in 2026 among other notable VPN services.

Windscribe Pros

1. Excellent Streaming Capabilities for Netflix and More

Netflix offers content specific to your location and sets geo-restrictions on its other shows. Someone watching in the US would see a significantly different selection in their Netflix library than someone watching in the UK. A VPN allows you to choose a server by location, thus enabling geo-locked content.

Netflix caught on to this and now shows an error if they detect an unblocker or proxy. While you may see these problems accessing Netflix with some other VPNs, Windscribe unblocked 8 out of 9 streaming libraries we tested. In fact, Windscribe Pro is among the best VPNs for streaming, with the ability to access major Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video regional libraries as of 2026, including US, UK, and German content.

Real-World Test: Unblocking Netflix US

To put Windscribe to the test, we attempted to access titles that are exclusive to the US and difficult to find elsewhere.

  • The proof: We used Netflix US to search for the series “Charmed”. This title is a US regional exclusive (thanks to uNoGS.com for easy search), and serves as a perfect “litmus test” for a VPN. As shown in the screenshot below, Windscribe successfully bypassed the geo-blocks, allowing the show to appear in the search results and stream without the VPN error message.
  • Disney+: Our testing also confirmed that Windscribe excellently got through to the Disney+ US library, maintaining the same level of accessibility found on Netflix.

Performance and Integration

Overall, Windscribe is consistently reliable for accessing Netflix across multiple regions, excluding Japan. However, the free version is limited to fewer locations. Their streaming servers, which previously were labeled as “Windflix,” have now been integrated into their regular server infrastructure, making all servers optimized for streaming.

While streaming performance is generally good for HD content, some users may experience occasional buffering with 4K content on certain servers. According to our recent tests, Windscribe maintained fairly consistent speeds for streaming with an average global speed loss of only about 13%, though load times can occasionally exceed 10 seconds on more distant servers.

2. Competitive Speeds, Though Not Quite Class-Leading

In our latest round of testing, it’s clear that Windscribe has made significant strides in closing the performance gap. While VPNs naturally introduce some overhead, Windscribe’s transition to the WireGuard protocol as its primary standard has resulted in a much more responsive experience than in previous years.

To provide a transparent look at how it handles real-world traffic, we established a baseline on our local wired connection before testing the VPN servers. We will use the WireGuard protocol for speed tests on all VPNs that have it or its variation.

The Baseline: Our Local Connection

Without any VPN active, our network established a strong starting point for these tests.

  • Download: 250.14 Mbps
  • Upload: 250.67 Mbps

Test 1: Local Performance (Picking “Nearest Server”)

For this test, we let the app do the heavy lifting by selecting the “Best Location” (auto-connect) feature. This shows the peak performance you can expect when the VPN optimizes for your current location.

Windscribe (Local “Best” Server)

  • Download: 241.37 Mbps
  • Upload: 240.37 Mbps

Upload speed drop is barely 3.6%, with upload dropping 4% and ping at 9ms, which is within excellent norms for all three criteria.

NordVPN (Local “Best” Server)

  • Download: 241.59 Mbps
  • Upload: 240.17

Compared to the currently fastest overall NordVPN, Windscribe showed practically identical results, even throwing some upload kilobits above it.

Test 2: US-Based Performance

We test the US speed twice. First, we connect to New York on the eastern US coast.

Windscribe (US NYC Server)

  • Download: 212.54 Mbps
  • Upload: 236.24 Mbps

Now we see a 14.8% download drop, 5.6% upload reduction, and a ping increase to 97ms. Keep in mind that when the traffic travels across the Atlantic Ocean, the ping will never go down below 85ms to 90ms due to fiber optics limitations.

NordVPN (US NYC Server)

  • Download: 228.61 Mbps
  • Upload: 233.80 Mbps

NordVPN maintains its lead in raw download speed here (8.4% drop), though Windscribe actually edges it out in upload performance on this specific US route.

Windscribe (US Los Angeles Server)

  • Download: 198.88 Mbps
  • Upload: 210.96 Mbps

Connected to Los Angeles on the Western Coast, we see a 20.4% download and 15.6% upload drops, and a ping of 162 ms. Although the bandwidth is still sufficient for streaming, the speed reduction is palpable with a slight browsing lag.

NordVPN (US Los Angeles Server)

  • Download: 215.87 Mbps
  • Upload: 213.51 Mbps

NordVPN performs slightly better, with 13.6% download and 14.4% upload drops, and 158 ms ping.

Remember, we’re now connected halfway across the world. Both Windscribe and NordVPN show exceptional results there, placing Windscribe alongside top-ranking VPNs speed-wise.

Test 3: International Reference (Germany – Berlin)

Windscribe perfectly handled the nearest location and long distance US connection. Let’s see how it connects to one of the busiest hubs in Berlin, Germany.

  • Download: 238.61 Mbps
  • Upload: 236.53 Mbps

Windscribe again shows a slight “speed ceiling” on downloads compared to the top-tier competition, but its upload performance is remarkable, nearly matching its local upload result and beating NordVPN.

It is evident that Windscribe handles European connections without issues. With these results, the speed drop is unnoticable and you can play online games without visible lag.

Test 4: Asia Connection

Windscribe (Japan Tokyo Server)

Download: 182.61 Mbps

Upload: 58.00 Mbps

Tokyo connection is the only location where Windscribe had some issues. Although the 26.8% speed drop is still acceptable considering the distance, the 76.8% upload drop is a bad result.

NordVPN (Japan – Tokyo Server)

Download: 195.07 Mbps

Upload: 226.07 Mbps

In comparison, NordVPN has a 13 Mbps faster download speed, but the real difference is a 4x faster upload speed. The download speed is great for both VPNs, but in this case, Windscribe has a visible setback.

The Verdict on Speed

Windscribe has improved massively. While it still falls slightly behind the top-tier download speeds of NordVPN in distant tests, it has carved out a niche as an excellent choice for users who prioritize independently owned VPN with strong performance in both the US and Europe.

3. Feature-Rich VPN Means Satisfying Usability

Windscribe offers an easy and user-friendly interface and installation process.

Installation

From the “Get Windscribe” page on their site, Windscribe offers download options by computer OS, mobile OS, and browser. They also include download options for TVs and routers. After choosing which is the best fit for you, the installation process is extremely simple.

Step 1

Windscribe offers a true two-click experience: once you run the installer for your platform, it sets itself up in seconds without any complex menus or configuration prompts. It is the definition of “plug and play,” getting you from the download folder to a secure connection almost instantly.

Step 2

Once installed, the Windscribe app will launch, asking the user if you already have an account. Take this moment to set up your account if you don’t already have one.

Sign-In

After logging in, you might encounter a playful “human check” captcha that adds a bit of personality to your security. It’s a quick, quirky task that ensures you’re a real person before whisking you straight into the app.

Once logged in, the Windscribe VPN app interface will launch. During this first app launch, a browser window popped up for me, notifying that the installation was complete and prompting me to add the Chrome extension. This is optional, but does add features like ad blocker and secure link generator.

First Glance

Windscribe’s app is non-intrusive to your desktop workspace and user-friendly. The app’s main screen shows your currently selected server, the current IP address, and the firewall, which is their advanced kill switch.

If you click on Windscribe Pro on top, it opens up your personalized newsfeed, keeping you looped in on the latest updates and features. Windscribe is highly personalizable, and you can turn off the notifications in its settings.

This isn’t just a dry list of updates; the newsfeed is for the community, featuring massive giveaways, $700 being the most recent one. It’s also where you’ll find fun, personalized insights like their “2025 Wrapped”, a Spotify-style breakdown of your year in privacy, making the app feel less like a utility and more like a club you actually want to be part of.

Now let’s get back to the main screen of the app. Clicking the three dots next to the IP address allows you to mark it as a favorite or rotate the IP address without switching server location.

Servers

Clicking on the server opens up the list of available servers to choose from. It places the “Best Location” on top, and you can choose specific countries and cities from one of the broadest city-level targeting options.

Servers that do not allow P2P sharing are clearly noted, making it easy to choose the right server for your needs.

Menu

Clicking on the three vertical lines in the top left of the app leads you to the settings.

General

The first choice in the dropdown menu is the preferences and configuration of the VPN app. In the General tab, you’ll find options for things like app launch and language settings.

Account

Next on the dropdown menu is “Account”, the Account tab provides a streamlined snapshot of your profile, displaying your username, email, and current subscription status at a glance. If you need to dive deeper, like managing your billing or updating security credentials, the handy “Manage Account” link whisks you straight to your secure web dashboard for full control.

Connection

The Connection tab is where Windscribe really lets you “pop the hood” and take total control of your network’s DNA. It’s packed with power-user tools like Split Tunneling, which lets you choose exactly which apps or websites bypass the VPN, and Decoy Traffic, a clever feature that generates random data to mask your actual activity patterns from prying eyes.

You can dive even deeper by spoofing your MAC address for extra anonymity on public Wi-Fi, adjusting Packet Sizes (MTU) to fix lag, or using the Proxy Gateway to turn your computer into a secure hub for devices that don’t support VPNs, like gaming consoles or smart TVs. Whether you’re using Circumvent Censorship to break through tough firewalls or tweaking your DNS settings, this tab transforms the app from a simple “on/off” switch into a precision-engineered privacy tool.

Meet R.O.B.E.R.T.

R.O.B.E.R.T. is a powerful, server-side DNS filter that acts as a customizable internet bouncer for your device. It operates at the network level, meaning it filters traffic across every app and game you use, though it’s important to note that it doesn’t function within the standalone browser extensions, which use their own built-in blockers instead.

The level of control is impressive; you can toggle entire categories of content on or off, including malware, ads, trackers, social networks, porn, gambling, clickbait, and cryptominers. You can even block “Other VPNs” to prevent network bypasses. If you need to get surgical, managing custom rules will open a browser window to your account dashboard, where you can manually whitelist or block specific domains. By stopping this junk at the DNS level before it even reaches your system, it not only boosts privacy but also speeds up your connection and saves data.

We decided to test R.O.B.E.R.T. and enabled blocking for Social, as you’ll see below.

Once applied, we tested and tried to visit Facebook, but was unable to connect. Social blocking is successful.

For those who want to get surgical with their security, R.O.B.E.R.T. allows you to build a fully personalized “Access List.” By clicking the custom rules link in the app, you’re taken to a sleek browser dashboard where you can manually whitelist specific IPs or domains, or even “spoof” them to redirect elsewhere. It’s a powerful way to fine-tune your experience, ensuring your favorite sites stay accessible while the rest of the web remains strictly filtered to your liking.

Port Forwarding

Within the My Account options and features, you’ll find port forwarding. This allows you to access services on your computer or home network remotely, while connected to Windscribe.

4. Leak and Virus Tests Show No Leaks or Viruses Detected

As with any of the VPNs reviewed, we do our best to verify that there are actually no IP, DNS, or WedRTC leaks and that your data protection is prioritized. Below are our findings after testing with IPLeak.net, Perfect-Privacy.com, BrowserLeaks, IPX.ac, and VirusTotal.com.

IPLeak.net TestNo Leak

Browserleaks.com DNS Leak TestNo Leak

BrowserLeaks WebRTC Leak TestNo Leak

Kill Switch Test – No Leak

VirusTotal.com Report

No viruses found.

5. Extensive Global Server Network

Windscribe has expanded its server network significantly since our last review. As of 2026, they offer servers in 69 locations across 100s locations, providing a diverse selection of connection options worldwide.

With the free version of their VPN, they offer servers in 10 different countries. Their pro version offers the full 69 locations and helps find the best server location for you. Servers with higher bandwidth (10Gbps) are also available for Pro users, offering better performance for streaming and other high-bandwidth activities.

6. Verified No-Logs Policy With Independent Audits

Most users are looking for a VPN to protect their data and keep their browsing activity anonymous, so what would be the point if the very VPN you’re using is logging your activity and information? Windscribe stands behind their no logging policy, which has now been verified through independent security audits.

During sign up, only a username and password need to be stored (email is entirely optional in order to recover the password at a later time). No connection logs, timestamps, IPs or session logs are ever stored. The only data they do confirm that they log is the total amount of bandwidth use and the time Windscribe was last used. This is done to ensure their tier limitations are kept.

Windscribe has undergone multiple security audits since 2021. Their desktop apps were audited by Leviathan Security Group in September 2021, their mobile apps in March 2022, and their VPN server infrastructure (called FreshScribe) was audited by Packetlabs in June 2024. All audits found no major security concerns, and Windscribe addressed all minor issues that were identified.

7. The Kill Switch (Firewall) Works Effectively

Windscribe’s firewall is a big reason why our earlier testing showed absolutely no leaks. But they state that they believe their firewall is a superior feature to other VPN providers’ standard kill switch feature.

With their firewall built into the Windows and Mac applications, all connectivity outside of the VPN tunnel you are connected to is blocked. Windscribe refers to a standard kill switch as a reactive feature, allowing a small period of time between the VPN disconnect and the app detecting it to allow for a leak. Their firewall blocks all connectivity period, so even if Windscribe is not on or crashes, no traffic is allowed outside of the VPN tunnel.

While we do understand where they see the difference, we have and may refer to their firewall feature as their kill switch, so that you are able to easily compare their features with other VPNs you may be looking into.

For testing, we had the firewall mode set to the strictest “Alaways-On+” mode. It immediately termianted connection, and we were not able to browse. As seen in the testing screenshot, we also pinged the Cloudflare server and no packets slipped while disconnected from Windscribe, passing the test 100%.

When we switched servers, the “kill switch” immediately kicked in, proactively severing our internet to ensure not a single packet of data leaked over your original IP connection. We weren’t able to resume browsing until the new secure tunnel was fully established, at which point a quick notification let us know we were protected and back online.

For this feature to be successful, the Firewall/Kill Switch must be turned on. Windscribe VPN does ensure your complete protection even when you may lose connection or switch servers.

8. Modern Protocol Support Including WireGuard

Windscribe offers a comprehensive selection of VPN protocols to suit different needs, with WireGuard now being the recommended default option for most users due to its superior speed and security. The full protocol lineup includes:

WireGuard: The newest and fastest protocol, now set as the default in the automatic connection mode. It offers excellent speed and security.
IKEv2: Previously the default protocol, it still offers fast connections but can be easier to block.
OpenVPN (UDP): The traditional VPN standard, offering a good balance of security and speed.
OpenVPN (TCP): More reliable in restricted networks but typically slower than UDP.
Stealth: Uses OpenVPN masked as HTTPS traffic to bypass restrictive networks.
WStunnel: Similar to Stealth but masks the connection as WebSocket traffic instead.

Under your Connection Mode preferences, you can choose to set automatically or manually. If you have Automatic selected, this will choose the best protocol available for you, typically defaulting to WireGuard when available.

9. Industry-Standard Encryption

Windscribe utilizes different encryption suites depending on the protocol and platform you choose, ensuring that security is optimized for the specific task at hand.

  • OpenVPN: This implementation uses AES-256-GCM for encryption, paired with SHA512 for authentication and a 4096-bit RSA key. It includes support for Perfect Forward Secrecy, which prevents encryption keys from being reused across different sessions.
  • WireGuard: As a modern, streamlined protocol, WireGuard uses ChaCha20 for symmetric encryption and Poly1305 for authentication. It also utilizes Curve25519 for key exchange and BLAKE2s for hashing.
  • IKEv2: The in-app implementation uses AES-256-GCM for encryption and SHA-256 for integrity checks. For key negotiation, the desktop and Android apps use ECP384 (DH group 20), while the iOS app utilizes ECP521 (DH group 21).
  • Browser Extensions: The extensions are secured via TLS 1.3 using the TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 cipher and X25519 for key exchange.

By matching specific ciphers to each protocol, the service maintains a high security baseline while allowing for the performance benefits inherent in newer protocols like WireGuard.

10. Enhanced Server Security After Ukraine Incident

Following a security incident in 2021 where two of Windscribe’s servers in Ukraine were seized by authorities, the company has significantly improved its server infrastructure security. All Windscribe servers now store encryption keys in memory only, not on disk, making it impossible for anyone to extract sensitive information even if they physically seize the server.

Additionally, Windscribe has implemented a system of short-lived certificates with 90-day expiry periods that are rotated every 75 days. Each server now has uniquely identifying certificates, and the OpenVPN client configurations validate extended key attributes using the common name unique to each server location.

These improvements, verified through independent security audits, demonstrate Windscribe’s commitment to maintaining user privacy and security, even in the face of server seizures or other threats.

Windscribe Cons

1. Using the TOR Network and P2P/Torrenting Are Allowed, but Assistance Is in Short Supply

TOR Network

What we found interesting is that information about using Windscribe with the TOR Network is still limited on their website or support pages. Using their AI chatbot Garry provides basic information that Windscribe does allow access to the TOR Network using the TOR Browser. However, detailed guidance for optimal configuration remains sparse.

P2P/Torrenting

Windscribe does mention in their support section that they support torrenting and P2P sharing.

On this support page, which I’ll provide below, they provide a walkthrough of the correct steps to take to ensure your privacy when torrenting:

https://windscribe.com/support/article/21/using-windscribe-with-torrent-clients

However, on their server list, you will see servers that don’t allow P2P sharing. These servers are noted by the icon in the server list.

Windscribe also offers a specific uTorrent Setup Guide on their site, which is definitely thorough in supporting the Windscribe SOCKS5 proxy with the client:

https://windscribe.com/guides/utorrent

While P2P is supported on most servers, users have reported variable speeds for torrenting activities. For heavy torrent users, there may be better-optimized VPN options available.

2. Customer Support Has Improved but Still Limited

Windscribe has enhanced its support ecosystem, though the experience remains a mix of instant AI efficiency and slower human intervention. Their AI chatbot, Garry, is great – delivering fast, actionable, and surprisingly witty answers to technical questions. However, for issues that require a human touch, like complex billing queries, you’re still funneled into a traditional ticketing system.

As of January 18, 2026, we opened a test ticket at 12:47 PM and received a human reply at 8:44 AM the next day – roughly 20 hours later. The message (screenshot below) came from Nile W and included direct links clarifying which servers allow P2P and Windscribe’s “limits of unlimited”/seedbox policy. While the guidance was helpful, the turnaround time underscores the gap versus providers with 24/7 live human chat.  For anything beyond the AI chatbot, you’re still routed through the ticket queue.

Support Options at a Glance:

  • Garry (AI Chatbot): Excellent for immediate troubleshooting and general “how-to” guidance.
  • Ticketing System: The primary route for account and billing issues, though response times can vary.
  • Knowledge Base: A comprehensive library of setup guides and FAQs.
  • Community Support: Very active presence on their Subreddit and Discord for peer-to-peer help and official announcements.

While Windscribe’s support isn’t the most immediate in the industry, it is functional. The AI chatbot, Garry, handles technical troubleshooting well, providing instant answers for the majority of common issues. However, many users still prefer a human touch for sensitive or complex matters, and the lack of a 24/7 live human chat remains a notable difference between Windscribe and some of its premium competitors.

3. They’re Located in Canada (Five Eyes Jurisdiction)

A VPN provider’s location can mean everything to your true privacy, especially when they are part of a jurisdiction that is required to share data when requested.

This is where a potential downfall could lie. Windscribe’s company headquarters is located in Ontario, Canada. And while VPNs are legal in Canada, it is a founding member of the Five Eyes Alliance. This means that, if your data is requested by intelligence agencies, Windscribe would have no choice but to hand it over under this agreement.

While this is unlikely to affect most users, especially given Windscribe’s verified no-logs policy and RAM-only server security measures, it does cause a sense of insecurity when choosing this VPN for highly sensitive activities. Their transparency reports and security audits help mitigate these concerns, but the jurisdictional issue remains.

The Jurisdictional Reality: Why Canada Is a “Con”

A VPN provider’s location can be the deciding factor for your true privacy, especially when they operate within a jurisdiction required to share data upon request. This is where a potential downfall for Windscribe lies: the company is headquartered in Ontario, Canada. While VPNs are perfectly legal in Canada, the country is a founding member of the Five Eyes Alliance. This agreement means that if intelligence agencies request user data, Windscribe would be legally compelled to comply.

However, there are two sides to this story:

  • The Policy vs. The Law: Canadian law does not currently mandate that VPNs store user logs. This is a critical distinction. Windscribe maintains a strict no-logs policy, and they have a proven track record of transparency, even winning a landmark 2025 court case in Greece because they simply had no data to turn over when requested.

  • The Risk of Gag Orders: Despite their integrity, being in Canada means they are subject to local subpoenas and potential “gag orders.” While they can’t hand over logs they don’t have, they are legally closer to global surveillance reach than a provider based in Panama or the British Virgin Islands. Their transparency reports and security audits help mitigate these concerns, but for some, the jurisdictional shadow remains.

While this is unlikely to affect most users, especially given Windscribe’s improved server security, it can cause a sense of insecurity for those engaging in highly sensitive activities. If you are a journalist or whistleblower, the jurisdiction might be a dealbreaker. For 99% of users, streamers, gamers, and general browsers, Windscribe’s technical security and verified refusal to log data are likely more important than the map coordinates of their office.

Pricing and Payment Methods

Windscribe offers a free trial and Pro versions of their software. The “free” service is limited in the amount of bandwidth (10GB monthly with email verification, 2GB without) and available servers (10 countries). However, if you do decide to upgrade to Pro, you’ll have more servers to choose from, unlimited data, and additional features.

Their monthly plan is $9 per month, while the annual plan costs $5.75 per month when paid yearly. In addition, they offer a few custom options, such as the Build-A-Plan option, which allows you to select specific server locations for $1 each per month (with a $3 minimum purchase) and add unlimited data for an additional $1.

Windscribe also offers the ScribeForce plan for teams of five or more, with centralized billing and team management features. The student discount continues to provide 40% off their yearly subscription plans.

They accept all standard payment methods including cryptocurrency, PayPal, major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard, and various alternate payment options.

As for their money back guarantee, they strongly encourage everyone to test their free trial first. However, if you are not satisfied with the Pro service, you have the chance to request a full refund within seven business days from the date of payment, provided that the software service was purchased directly with them and you do not exceed 10GB of global traffic volume.

Conclusion

Windscribe has made significant strides since our last review, particularly in its commitment to transparency and server security. By transitioning to a fully RAM-disk infrastructure and undergoing multiple third-party audits, including a 2024 infrastructure audit and a 2025 court-proven “no-logs” victory in Greece, it has effectively silenced many of the security concerns following the 2021 Ukraine incident.

The service truly shines in its versatility. It remains a powerhouse for unblocking streaming libraries, with its ability to access over 32 Netflix regions and the difficult-to-crack Disney+ US catalog. Standout tools like the R.O.B.E.R.T. ad-blocker and the unique “Build-A-Plan” pricing continue to make it one of the most flexible and customizable options on the market.

However, a few areas still prevent Windscribe from claiming the top spot:

  • Performance Gap: While local speeds are blazing fast, the service still shows a noticeable “speed ceiling” on certain US and international routes compared to leaders like NordVPN.
  • Support: The AI chatbot “Garry” is excellent for quick fixes, but the lack of 24/7 human live chat remains a hurdle for complex, urgent issues.
  • Jurisdiction: While Windscribe has proven it doesn’t keep logs, its Canadian headquarters still keeps it within the 5-Eyes alliance, which may give pause to those with extreme anonymity needs.

The Final Verdict: Windscribe is a high-value, feature-rich VPN that is perfect for streamers, power users who love to tweak settings. Its free version remains the gold standard for the industry. While it may not yet match the raw, uniform speed of the absolute top-tier providers, its transparency and exceptional upload performance make it a reliable and trustworthy choice for 2026.
