AceVPN review

AceVPN is a VPN service that has been operating for over 15 years and is owned by American company SecureNet LLC.

The provider’s global server network is made up of an unspecified number of servers in 25+ countries across North and South America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

AceVPN positions their service as fast, secure, and anonymous. This represents the core promise that most VPN providers strive to deliver on.

However, making these claims is one thing – proving them through rigorous testing is another matter entirely.

We conducted comprehensive testing of AceVPN, evaluating everything from usability and connection speeds to security protocols and customer support quality.

In this comprehensive AceVPN review, we examine three critical questions: Does it deliver fast performance? Can it provide robust security? And does it truly offer the anonymous browsing experience they promise?

Ace VPN Pros

AceVPN employs industry-standard AES 256-bit encryption and provides access to multiple established VPN protocols for secure internet tunneling.

The service can mask your public IP address, allowing you to virtually relocate to different countries for accessing geo-restricted content including some streaming services.

They permit torrenting on select servers, support a wide range of devices, and maintain responsive customer service.

Here’s a detailed examination of their strengths.

1. Industry-Standard Encryption and VPN Protocols

AceVPN utilizes the industry-standard 256-bit AES encryption. This represents the same military and financial-grade security that cybersecurity professionals worldwide depend upon for protecting sensitive data.

This encryption standard is trusted by security professionals around the world, and no known supercomputers have ever been able to come remotely close to cracking it.

The service also employs IKEv2 IPSEC VPN Servers with a 384-bit Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm. This represents advanced cryptographic protection.

AceVPN elliptic curve

Elliptic Curve cryptography is utilized by government agencies for classified communications.

AceVPN also provides OpenVPN protocol support, which remains the gold standard for VPN connections. While newer protocols like WireGuard offer faster speeds, OpenVPN continues to be widely trusted for its proven security record. Many leading VPN services still rely on OpenVPN as their primary protocol option.

For users requiring alternatives, AceVPN offers additional protocol choices:

2. Limited Netflix Streaming Capability

Based on testing, approximately one in four AceVPN servers successfully accessed Netflix content.

While a 25% success rate may seem modest, it’s important to note that Netflix has significantly strengthened its VPN detection capabilities in recent years, implementing advanced blocking measures due to content licensing restrictions.

Most VPN providers struggle with Netflix compatibility. Only top-tier services like NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN consistently maintain reliable Netflix access.

AceVPN includes Netflix access as part of their Unblock TV Safe DNS feature, though users may need to test multiple servers to find working connections.

3. P2P File Sharing Permitted on Select Servers

Torrenting and P2P file sharing serve legitimate purposes beyond entertainment downloads.

Major technology companies utilize BitTorrent protocols for software distribution. Gaming companies like Blizzard use torrenting for game updates, while various organizations employ P2P technology for efficient large file transfers.

However, P2P connections can expose users to security risks and legal concerns when used for copyrighted material.

AceVPN permits torrenting through their Ultimate VPN package, which offers unlimited bandwidth but requires downloading configuration files for P2P servers. They restrict torrenting on US and UK servers due to regulatory concerns.

While this limitation prevents them from ranking among the top VPNs for torrenting, their P2P support still provides value for legitimate use cases.

4. Extensive Device and Platform Support

AceVPN maintains compatibility with an impressive range of devices and operating systems.

Beyond standard desktop and mobile platforms including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, the service extends to smart devices, routers, and gaming consoles.

AceVPN supports:

  • Desktop Computers
  • Laptops
  • PlayStation Gaming Systems
  • Xbox Gaming Systems
  • Nintendo Wii Gaming Systems
  • Linux
  • iPad
  • iPhone
  • Android Phones
  • Android Tablets
  • Windows Phones
  • Windows Tablets
  • Chromecast
  • Roku
  • Kindle Fire TV
  • Asus Routers
  • Tomato Routers
  • DD-WRT Routers
  • Blu-Ray Players
  • And more

This represents one of the most comprehensive device compatibility lists available in the VPN market.

5. Built-In Kill Switch Protection

AceVPN includes an integrated kill switch feature, which provides crucial protection during connection interruptions.

When VPN tunnel stability becomes compromised, the kill switch immediately terminates internet access before your real IP address can be exposed. This prevents potential privacy breaches during connection drops.

Given the increasing importance of leak protection, we consider kill switch functionality essential for any serious VPN service.

6. Responsive Customer Support Experience

Customer support interactions often prove frustrating with many VPN providers, typically requiring extended email exchanges or unhelpful automated responses.

Our experience with AceVPN’s support proved notably different. Email inquiries received thorough, helpful responses within eight hours.

AceVPN customer support reply

This response demonstrates quality customer service – not only addressing the specific question but providing educational resources for deeper understanding.

AceVPN also operates a support forum where users can submit questions. All topics require approval before posting, and responses demonstrate genuine engagement with user concerns.

AceVPN forum reply

The support team’s approach shows genuine interest in solving user problems while asking clarifying questions to better understand specific needs.

From a customer service perspective, this represents exemplary performance.

7. Tor Network Compatibility

AceVPN permits access to the Tor browser, providing an additional privacy layer for users requiring enhanced anonymity.

While Tor has faced scrutiny in recent years, and many VPN providers restrict its use, AceVPN continues supporting Tor connections on their servers.

Using a VPN with Tor creates a “double-hop” configuration that not only conceals browsing activity but also hides the fact that you’re using Tor at all.

This combination offers enhanced privacy protection for users with legitimate anonymity requirements.

Ace VPN Cons

Despite several positive features, AceVPN faces significant challenges that impact its overall value proposition.

Our comprehensive testing revealed multiple areas where the service falls short of user expectations.

Here are the primary concerns to consider before subscribing.

1. Data Collection and Privacy Concerns

AceVPN prominently states on their website that they maintain no logs of internet activity.

acevpn logging info

However, a detailed examination of their privacy policy reveals a more complex picture.

AceVPN personal info collected

The policy outlines collection of personal information for service operation. While this represents standard practice in a post-GDPR regulatory environment, where even basic identifiers like IP addresses have been at the center of major enforcement cases and contributed to over 2,245 fines totaling approximately $6.46 billion, it exceeds what many privacy-focused users expect from a VPN provider claiming “no logs.”

AceVPN logging policy

The policy clarifies that while they don’t monitor internet usage or bandwidth consumption, they do retain personal information. This contradicts the promise of completely anonymous browsing and becomes particularly concerning given their US jurisdiction.

2. US Jurisdiction and Five Eyes Alliance Concerns

SecureNet LLC, AceVPN’s parent company, operates under US jurisdiction, creating potential privacy implications for international users.

The United States serves as a founding member of the Five Eyes intelligence sharing alliance, which facilitates surveillance data exchange among member nations.

Current Five Eyes participants include:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand

This alliance has since expanded to include nine additional countries, bringing the total to 14 participating nations in various intelligence sharing arrangements.

The practical implication is that if US authorities demand AceVPN surrender user information, the company must comply with legal requirements. This information can then be shared with intelligence agencies across all alliance member countries.

AceVPN addresses this concern through their official transparency report, published quarterly, stating they have never complied with government investigation requests.

Official transparency report

While the ongoing threat of intelligence alliance surveillance remains concerning, this transparency represents a positive step toward user accountability.

3. DNS Leak Detection Results

Privacy leaks represent the most serious VPN failure mode. When leaks occur, your real IP address becomes visible to your internet service provider, defeating the VPN’s primary purpose.

The most common leak types include DNS leaks and WebRTC leaks.

DNS leaks occur when your device bypasses the VPN server for DNS resolution, typically without user awareness. During these incidents, you may believe you’re protected while your ISP monitors all browsing activity.

WebRTC, while beneficial for browser-based real-time communications, can interfere with VPN connections and expose original IP addresses on Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Android, and iOS browsers.

Our comprehensive leak testing protocol subjects every VPN to six different leak detection tools. AceVPN failed one of these six tests.

  • https://ipleak.net/ – Passed
  • https://www.perfect-privacy.com/check-ip – Passed
  • https://ipx.ac/run – Passed
  • https://browserleaks.com/webrtc – Passed
  • https://www.perfect-privacy.com/dns-leaktest/ – Failed
  • https://dnsleak.com – Passed

The service successfully protected against IP and WebRTC leaks:

4. Significant Speed Performance Issues

While no VPN can increase your base internet speed, quality providers minimize speed reduction to maintain usable performance levels.

Unfortunately, AceVPN demonstrates substantial speed limitations that significantly impact user experience.

Many high-performance VPNs maintain reasonable speeds even with encryption overhead, but AceVPN falls well short of these benchmarks.

Our standardized speed testing protocol evaluates both European and US server performance, measuring the percentage of speed loss during VPN connections.

European server results showed moderate performance degradation:

EU Speed test

EU Speed Test Results:

  • Ping: 52 ms
  • Download: 37.25 Mbps (61.5% reduction from 97 Mbps baseline)
  • Upload: 25.76 Mbps (51% reduction from 53 Mbps baseline)

US server testing revealed severe performance problems, with download speeds dropping by over 90%:

US speed test

US Speed Test Results:

  • Ping: 253 ms
  • Download: 8.48 Mbps (91.3% reduction from 97 Mbps baseline)
  • Upload: 10.58 Mbps (80% reduction from 53 Mbps baseline)

Among VPN services we’ve evaluated, AceVPN ranks in the bottom tier for speed performance, making it unsuitable for bandwidth-intensive activities like streaming or gaming.

5. Complex Installation and Connection Problems

Modern VPN services typically offer streamlined installation processes with one-click setup and automatic configuration.

AceVPN’s installation procedure represents a significant departure from this user-friendly approach, requiring multiple manual steps that many users will find overwhelming.

The installation process involves downloading OpenVPN software separately, then configuring administrator permissions, downloading password files, extracting configuration archives, and manually copying files to specific system directories. The detailed setup requirements demonstrate the complexity involved.

First, users must download OpenVPN software independently:

OpenVPN installation needed for Ace VPN

Next, the program requires administrator privilege configuration:

OpenVPN GUI Properties

Users must then download authentication files:

Save Password File

Finally, configuration files require manual extraction and placement in specific system directories.

During our testing, even after completing this complex setup process, connection attempts consistently failed across multiple servers.

Ace VPN failed to install error

Testing ten different servers resulted in universal connection failures, indicating either systemic technical issues or inadequate setup documentation.

This installation experience demonstrates that AceVPN prioritizes technical users over mainstream consumers seeking simple VPN solutions.

6. Single Connection Limitation

AceVPN offers two primary service tiers: Premium VPN and Ultimate VPN, both including Safe DNS Unlock TV service at no additional cost.

AceVPN pricing and cost

Despite supporting multiple device types, both plans restrict users to a single simultaneous connection. This limitation means household members cannot share accounts across devices, requiring separate paid subscriptions for each concurrent user.

Most contemporary VPN services provide three to five simultaneous connections per account, with some offering unlimited connections. AceVPN’s single-connection policy represents a significant competitive disadvantage.

The Premium VPN plan restricts server access to US, UK, and French locations across 20+ server positions, while Ultimate VPN subscribers gain access to the complete network spanning 25+ countries and 50+ locations.

VPN server country locations

Note that servers in Brazil and Egypt provide Smart DNS functionality only, without VPN protocol support.

AceVPN Costs, Plans, and Payment Options

AceVPN markets their service with claims that “No VPN provider comes close to our service offerings,” while emphasizing competitive pricing.

However, actual costs reveal a different picture, particularly for accessing full functionality.

lowest price for best value? Not really

While entry-level plans begin at $3.89 per month, these Premium packages include significant server limitations and exclude torrenting capabilities.

The Ultimate VPN package, required for complete feature access, costs $15 monthly, $13.75 annually, $12.50 over two years, or $11.66 over three years. These prices exceed most premium VPN services, which typically charge around $10 monthly for full access.

Extended commitment reduces costs somewhat:

AceVPN pricing structure

Annual subscriptions reduce pricing to $13.75 monthly, while three-year commitments bring costs to $11.67 monthly. However, paying over $10 monthly for a VPN with restricted torrenting capabilities and single-device limitations represents poor value compared to market alternatives.

AceVPN premium pricing

The Premium VPN package offers more reasonable pricing but comes with substantial functional restrictions that limit its appeal.

Payment methods

Payment options include PayPal, mailed payments, or Bitcoin through Coinbase. The absence of direct credit card processing seems unusual, though users can pay via credit card through PayPal.

Bitcoin support provides additional privacy for users preferring cryptocurrency transactions.

AceVPN’s terms of service offer a seven-day money-back guarantee for new customers.

However, refunds incur a one-dollar processing fee, and requests beyond the seven-day window receive no consideration. The policy also excludes refunds for “disputed or chargedback payments.”

Do We Recommend AceVPN?

Based on comprehensive testing and analysis, we cannot recommend AceVPN for most users.

While the service demonstrates some positive qualities on paper, multiple significant issues prevent it from competing effectively with established VPN providers.

The combination of personal information logging and US jurisdiction creates privacy concerns that contradict their anonymity promises.

Performance problems, including severe speed reductions exceeding 90% on some servers, make the service impractical for bandwidth-intensive activities.

The complex installation process and connection reliability issues create user experience problems that most consumers will find unacceptable.

DNS leak detection during testing raises additional security concerns about the service’s ability to consistently protect user privacy.

Finally, pricing above $10 monthly for limited features, single-device connections, and restricted torrenting represents poor value compared to market alternatives.

While their customer support deserves recognition for responsiveness and helpfulness, this single positive aspect cannot overcome the service’s multiple fundamental shortcomings.

For users seeking reliable VPN protection with modern features, user-friendly setup, and competitive pricing, numerous superior alternatives exist in today’s market.

    Getflix VPN/DNS

According to my research, getflix is absolutely the cheapest and best VPN and DNS value in the world. The last time I checked it was $2 and $0.76 per month over a two-year period. It's extremely fast and secure and I have no idea why these guys at the best VPN dot-com are ignoring it!
