Best VPN Ireland 2026: Top 5 Tested & Ranked

13-step review process Fact-checked

Last updated: October 6, 2026

Article Summary

  • Top pick for Ireland: NordVPN, 225 locations, so you are guaranteed an Irish server at home and abroad, with the best connection speed
  • Cheapest long plan: Surfshark, $2.39/month +bonus months, no device cap, and works great with the TG4 streaming service
  • Best for all content: ExpressVPN, 14 devices on one subscription and the only VPN that unblocked all three streaming services
  • Tested: 30 VPNs in our review programme; for this test, all five picks have Ireland servers for streaming
You’re travelling outside Ireland, you go to stream the match or catch up on a show, and RTÉ Player, TG4, or Virgin Media Player will not load. You will see an error like the one below.
RTÉ Player geo-restriction error shown outside Ireland
That’s because a lot of their content, especially sports streams, is geographically restricted to Ireland. The same applies to worldwide streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Max. They all use geographical restrictions, limiting the content available to you in Ireland.
You can bypass these restrictions using a VPN. We have selected five VPNs with excellent streaming capabilities and tested them with Irish streaming services. Below, you will find out which ones unblock the most content with the best possible quality. All results have been tested first-hand.

Top VPNs for Ireland Reviewed

1. NordVPN: Widest Location Selection

225 locations across 9,000 servers are a wider selection than any other VPN on this list. For an Irish buyer, that settles two things with one subscription. You need an Irish server so your own services keep recognising you while you’re abroad. You also need servers in other countries to unblock their exclusive content. Whatever that second country turns out to be, NordVPN almost certainly covers it.
NordVPN has the lowest speed drop (only 6.4%) out of five tested VPNs. On the first try, it unblocked RTÉ Player and TG4 in HD quality. We didn’t encounter any buffering, but the Virgin Media Player remained blocked on two tested VPN protocols.
NordVPN offers a wide range of cybersecurity benefits, such as real-time malware protection, scam checker, dark web monitor, and more. It’s not only an excellent streaming VPN but also a reliable cybersecurity tool and travel companion.

2. Surfshark: The Cheapest Long Plan

Surfshark is a Netherlands company, which makes it the only pick on this page living under the same data-protection law an Irish reader does. It has a minimal 7.2% speed drop and works on unlimited devices. It has the lowest long-term plan pricing on the list and generally positions itself as a VPN for the whole household.

Surfshark unblocked RTÉ Player and TG4, but did not work with Virgin Media Player on both tested protocols. But that’s not a problem if you’re looking to watch sports, as TG4 has a much wider selection.
Additionally, Surfshark offers a top-rated antivirus in its Surfshark One bundle, approved by an independent antivirus testing lab. If you seek an excellent Ireland streaming VPN that also protects your whole home network, it hits every spot.

3. ExpressVPN: Unblock All Three Services

ExpressVPN successfully unblocked all three Irish streaming services. We managed to launch even the challenging Virgin Media Player, although the video quality was far from impressive. Also, we had to switch protocols to unblock TG4 on the second try, which is alright as far as streaming restrictions go.
We’re glad to say that ExpressVPN is no longer one of the more expensive VPNs around. It has reworked its pricing system and now offers competitive prices, even going below NordVPN.
However, it was also the slowest of all five, with a 17.2% speed drop. That’s because only its TCP protocols unblocked all three services. This protocol type avoids detection better, but at the cost of speed. One way or another, if you aim to stream all three Irish platforms, ExpressVPN is the way to go.

4. IPVanish: Best for Virgin Media Player

IPVanish is the only one on this list to offer an HD Virgin Media Player stream on the second try (using the OpenVPN TCP protocol instead of WireGuard). The speed retention is a great 92.8%, and RTÉ Player also works as smoothly as it can.
But it’s not the best for sports streams, as IPVanish did not unblock TG4 on three protocols we tested. Similar to Surfshark, it also offers an antivirus and does not limit simultaneous connections, so these two compete directly.
Its 3,400 servers across 150 locations network is not the biggest, but more than enough to satisfy streaming needs. We recommend it as a priority pick for Virgin Media Player.

5. Proton VPN: Swiss Base, Free Tier

ProtonVPN finalizes our best Ireland streaming VPN list. We’ll be blunt: it has its shortcomings. It unblocked only the RTÉ Player, which worked flawlessly. Unfortunately, it struggles to unblock the other two streaming sites, both on WireGuard and Proton Stealth protocols.
Its major benefit is that ProtonVPN offers a genuinely free VPN version. You get a limited selection of locations, but don’t have to pay a penny to access content that’s not available in your location.
Simultaneously, ProtonVPN unblocked all streaming sites during our worldwide streaming tests. It includes Netflix US, UK, and DE, as well as Max and the BBC iPlayer. It’s a great choice to change the Netflix region. That’s good enough for us to list it here, and you’ll decide whether it lives up to your needs.

Why You Need a VPN in Ireland

Start with where you’re sitting, because the answer moves. Leave the country, and your own services stop recognising you. Stay in, and half of what you already pay for arrives, cut down to the Irish edition. Nothing meaningful is blocked to you here; what you’re up against is which side of a border your IP lands on, and a VPN is a border tool.

The going-away version bites first: Irish broadcasters serve Ireland, so a work trip or a semester abroad turns catch-up TV into an error message. Live Irish sport is the sharpest case, since a match half the country is watching won’t wait until you’re home.

The staying-home version is quieter and costs you more over time. An Irish Netflix or Prime subscription costs the same as everyone else’s and carries a smaller catalogue than the American or British one, as our breakdown of Netflix library size by country shows. Same money, less telly. The UK edition is where Irish subscribers usually look next, and our guide to the best VPNs in the UK covers that ground.

Two smaller reasons come up constantly. Banks and government portals sometimes challenge logins arriving from an unfamiliar country, so people connect back to an Irish server before signing in from abroad. Risk engines are opaque and vary by institution, so treat that as a workaround rather than a guarantee. And hotel, airport, and café Wi-Fi? You control nothing about it, which is the plainest argument for keeping the tunnel up while you travel.

How to Watch RTÉ Player and Irish TV Abroad

That location error isn’t a bug. RTÉ’s statutory job, set out in section 114 of the Broadcasting Act 2009, is a free-to-air public service made available “to the whole community on the island of Ireland”. Reaching Irish communities beyond the island is a separate object in the same section, which is why a separate international service exists with its own catalogue.

Virgin Media Player and TG4 sit inside the same rights logic, and all three want the same thing: an Irish IP on the request that loads the page. Here is proof that TG4 Sports is not available outside the borders of Ireland.

TG4 Sport unavailable outside Ireland

First things first, to unblock RTÉ Player and Virgin Media Player, you must create an account. It’s best done using an Irish IP address, and Virgin Media Player also asks for an Eircode (Irish postcode) when you sign up.
TG4 does not require logging in, so you can access its streams simply using a VPN server in Ireland.
Now, let’s get to the exact results we got while testing Irish streaming services. To rank them, we considered unblocked content, as well as pricing and connection speed, to ensure HD streaming quality.
NordVPN was the fastest, retaining an impressive 93.6% of the initial connection speed. It unblocked RTÉ Player and TG4 on HD streams on the first try, and the overall streaming experience was excellent.

Unfortunately, Virgin Media Player remained blocked on both NordLynx and the OpenVPN TCP protocol, which is typically better for bypassing streaming blocks.
However, this player proved particularly difficult, producing the error below in most cases. Due to its wide location selection, amazing performance with other streaming services, and robust cybersecurity benefits, NordVPN is at the top of our list.
Virgin Media Player proxy-detection block
Surfshark performed equally well with a small caveat. RTÉ Player lagged on the first try, so we reconnected to a different server. That fixed the issue, and we were able to stream in HD. It worked flawlessly with TG4, granting us access to the sports stream also in HD.
Surfshark streaming TG4 live sport in HD
Surfshark’s speeds were also top, retaining 92.8% of the original connection speed. However, it also didn’t unblock Virgin Media Player. But because Surfshark has the lowest long-term pricing with 3 bonus free months, it deserves its spot at the top of the list.
ExpressVPN is the only one that unblocked all three streaming services, but that took a few tries. We finally managed to get Virgin Media Player to stream, but the quality was far from perfect, no matter which protocol we tried.
ExpressVPN playing Virgin Media Player
Like all other tested VPNs, RTÉ Player worked perfectly in HD quality on the first try. TG4 did not work on the proprietary Lightway TCP protocol, but it started streaming in HD when we switched to OpenVPN TCP.

ExpressVPN streaming TG4 in HD over OpenVPN TCP

On a less positive note, ExpressVPN had the biggest speed drop of 17.2%. We recommend ExpressVPN if you seek to unblock all three streaming services and don’t mind trying a few different servers.
Next is IPVanish, which also managed to unblock Virgin Media Player. It did not work with the WireGuard protocol, but OpenVPN TCP delivered an HD stream, so IPVanish is the best choice for this streaming service.
IPVanish streaming Virgin Media Player in HD over OpenVPN TCP
Like with others, RTÉ Player HD quality worked on the first hit. However, IPVanish did not unblock TG4 on the three tested protocols.
This difference between VPNs shows the quality of their Ireland servers and how often they update the pool with new working ones. IPVanish also maintained 92.8% speed retention, alongside the fastest VPNs we tested.
ProtonVPN is the last on our list. Starting with the good, RTÉ Player worked flawlessly on the first try, providing HD quality without any buffering.
Proton VPN streaming RTÉ One in HD
Unfortunately, the TG4 and Virgin Media Player did not work, including on the Proton Stealth protocol. Also, we noticed that ProtonVPN’s ad blocker prevents the TG4 player from loading at all, so you may want to turn it off if you notice streaming issues.
On the bright side, ProtonVPN offers a genuinely free version. Since it costs nothing, you may want to try its free servers to unblock content worldwide. It’s also fast, with a 10.8% speed drop.

The nearest analogue in our own testing is BBC iPlayer, another licence-funded national broadcaster that actively blocks commercial VPN ranges, and all five picks above cleared it in our most recent pass. Our BBC iPlayer VPN guide has the details. Across the rest of that cycle, only two misses turned up anywhere: Netflix UK on ExpressVPN, and Netflix US plus Prime Video on IPVanish. What that tells you about RTÉ isn’t which provider to buy. It’s that the block is an IP-reputation problem rather than an account problem, which is why every fix below is about the address you arrive on.

Four practical things about Irish broadcaster sites:

  1. Connect before the player loads. The site decides your region on the request that fetches the page, so raising a tunnel after the error appears changes nothing. Reload once you’re connected.
  2. Clear cookies and cache for that domain specifically. Broadcaster sites remember the region they last served you, and a stale cookie keeps answering for it long after your IP has moved.
  3. Turn IPv6 off. None of these providers carry IPv6 inside the tunnel, so an IPv6-enabled connection can still hand the site your true location. Switching it off at the OS or router is normal practice rather than a workaround; our guide to hiding your IP covers checking what the site sees.
  4. One flagged Irish server is far more common than a whole flagged network, so change server before you change provider. Try another server, then a different protocol, and only then ask for your money back.

How We Tested the Best VPNs for Ireland

30 VPNs sit in our review database and go back through measurement on a repeating cycle. The five here are the ones whose current numbers we read against what an Irish reader is actually looking for.

Hit-rate counts the platforms that actually played for us. We also include which ones worked on the first time and which required switching servers. That also reflects the quality of the chosen VPN Ireland server network.

We measure speed by marking down our baseline without the VPN connection, which is 250Mbps.
Baseline speed test of 250 Mbps without a VPN
We then measure each VPN’s speed while connected to a server in Ireland. Also, we measure the protocol that unblocks streaming platforms at the best quality, which was High Definition in the vast majority of cases.
Here are the speed results for all five VPNs: NordVPN 233.88Mbps, Surfshark 231.90Mbps, ExpressVPN 207.02Mbps, IPVanish 232.23Mbps, ProtonVPN 222.91Mbps.
The results above are quite similar. ExpressVPN falls outside the norm only due to TCP protocol specifics, which bypassed the blocks better, sacrificing a small fraction of speed. We finalized our rankings based more on the general streaming quality, pricing, and additional benefits, concluding with the overall price-to-value ratio.
