Tinder keeps showing you the same profiles no matter how much you swipe.

Or maybe you’re worried about exposing your location to strangers or scammers pretending to be interested in you.

Whatever the case, changing your Tinder location can help your overall experience with the app.

In this guide, I’ll share a few easy methods you can follow to modify your Tinder location plus some safety and scam prevention tips to keep your Tinder account protected.

Why Change Your Tinder Location?

Changing your Tinder location makes sense for several different reasons:

  • Plan ahead of travel or relocation: You can change your Tinder location to a place where you plan to visit for vacation or shift permanently in a few years. Doing so can help you set up dates and meetups well in advance before you arrive.
  • Broaden your matches: If you live in a smaller town or have been using the app for a while, you may have exhausted all your dating options. Changing your location gives you new profiles to swipe through, improving your chances of finding a match.
  • Improve visibility to others: When you set up a new location, Tinder treats you as a “new user” in that area. And Tinder’s algorithm is designed to push new profiles to existing users so they have fresh faces to swipe through. As such, changing your Tinder location can get your profile to show up in others’ feeds faster than using the app normally.
  • Enhance privacy: Tinder being a location-based app tracks your whereabouts constantly. Changing your location helps safeguard your personal details, especially when done using a VPN.

How to Change Tinder Location with a VPN (Step-by-Step)

You can change your Tinder location in a few different ways. The best way as far as I am aware is to use a VPN to change your IP address. Not only will this protect your sensitive personal data from hackers, but it will also enable you to bypass network blocks and access Tinder in places where the app is officially unavailable.

It’s also easy to set up a VPN for Tinder. Although the steps may somewhat vary between different VPN providers, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Choose a VPN provider with a large global server network, like NordVPN.
  2. Download the VPN from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and sign in.

  1. Pick a server in the city or country where you want to appear on Tinder and tap “Connect.”

  1. As Tinder primarily relies on GPS to detect a user’s location, you’ll want to change your coordinates to point to the same city or country as your VPN server.

On Android:

  • Go to Settings > About Phone and tap Build Number seven times until it says “You are a developer.”
  • Install a reliable GPS spoofing app like Fake GPS from the Play Store.
  • In Developer Options, find “Select Mock Location App” and select Fake GPS
  • Open the Fake GPS app and drop the pin in the same city as your VPN server
  • Clear the Tinder app cache in your phone’s settings and restart the app

On iOS, it is not possible to natively mock your Tinder location. However, you can connect your iPhone to a computer and a computer-based spoofing tool like AnyTo to override system-wide GPS signals.

  1. Restart or close and then reopen Tinder so it detects the new location.
  2. Sign in to your Tinder account and start swiping.

Using Tinder Passport to Change Your Location

Tinder Passport is a built-in feature of Tinder that allows you to change your location to see new matches. Available to Tinder Plus, Gold, and Platinum subscribers, it lets you set a new location by searching for a city or dropping a pin on the map. Although it comes with the restriction that you can only be in one city at a time, you can change mock locations as many times as you desire.

Here are the steps for changing your Tinder location using Passport Mode:

  1. Open Tinder on mobile
  2. Tap the profile icon in the top-right corner
  3. Tap the gear icon to go to Settings
  4. Choose “Passport™ Mode” or tap Location under Discovery Settings
  5. Tap Add new location
  6. Type the name of your desired city in the search box and or drop a pin on the map to add a new location.
  7. Go back to Tinder’s main app screen and start swiping through profiles in the new location.

You can change your location to any city in the world, such as Toronto, London, or Bangalore. Plus, you can switch back to previously used cities by accessing them through Tinder’s list of your most recent locations.

Other Methods to Change Your Tinder Location

Your options for changing your Tinder location aren’t exhausted just yet. Here are a few other methods you can use to boost your profile visibility.

Proxy server

Accessing Tinder via a proxy changes your IP address on the app. However, it doesn’t encrypt your browsing history as a VPN does.

That’s not the best thing if your main goal is to protect sensitive data from hackers, but it can help you stay anonymous temporarily. Consider weighing VPN vs proxy to help you decide which option best fits your situation.

Facebook

If you previously logged into Tinder via Facebook, changing your Facebook location will also change your location on the Tinder app.

Open your Facebook profile and click Settings > Location. From the options, choose “Never” to force Facebook to use your IP address and not the phone’s GPS to approximate your location.

Manual IP change

You can also change your IP address manually via your phone settings. On iPhone, go to Settings and tap Wi-Fi  > Network. Then in the IPv4 address section, click Configure IP and select Manual. You should now be able to enter your new IP address.

If you’re using an Android phone, head over to Settings and choose Wireless & Networks. Open your Wi-Fi network, then click Modify Network > Advanced Options > Change Your IP Address. Once done, you should be able to enter the new location address.

Why Is Tinder Not Working with My VPN?

Tinder is not working with your VPN because the IP addresses associated with it have likely been detected and blacklisted by the app.

Or it might be that the location the VPN is showing is entirely different from the one associated with your GPS data.

The network you’re connected to can also be the cause, with school and work networks often blocking VPN traffic for bandwidth or policy reasons.

To resolve these issues, clear Tinder’s cache and data to refresh its memory and then try connecting with the VPN. If you’re using Tinder on Android, use a GPS spoofting tool to align your device’s location with the VPN server. You can also consider using a dedicated IP address (ask your VPN provider if they offer this) as it is less likely to be flagged by Tinder’s security systems.

If you’re currently using a free VPN, switching to a higher-quality option like NordVPN is often all it takes to get Tinder working again.

Tinder Location Safety Tips and Scam Prevention

Tinder mostly uses your location to show you nearby matches. However, this location information can be intercepted by bad actors who may use it to track your movements or figure out where you live. Tinder itself can also share your data with third parties or retain it even after you delete your account.

To improve the safety of your Tinder location:

  • Disable “Show Me on Tinder”: If you’re visiting a new location for business or personal reasons, turn off “Show me on Tinder” in settings to avoid unwanted attention.
  • Avoid sharing your live location: Never share your live location with someone you haven’t met. Instead, use the built-in “Share My Date” feature to share specific information with trusted contacts.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi: Using Tinder on public Wi-Fi can expose your IP address and location data to hackers. Always use a secure, private connection or mobile data when swiping.
  • Toggle Incognito Mode on: If you’re using one of the paid plans, you can activate Incognito Mode to ensure that only people you’ve already liked can see your profile.
  • Never upload location-tagged photos: Double check that your profile images don’t include any landmarks, street signs, or other details that could give away your location.
  • Use a VPN: A VPN encrypts your connection and keeps your IP address hidden from prying eyes. This improves your location safety as potential hackers can only see the virtual IP that’s tied to the VPN server’s location.

You’ll also want to watch out for scams like matches asking you for money to buy plane tickets or requesting gift cards or prepaid cards as a gesture of commitment. Do not send any money and report the suspicious profile to Tinder as well as the FTC and FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint (IC3)

You can also use TinyEye or Google Images to check if their profile picture is real or stolen from someone else – fake pictures are often a sign of malicious intent and should be treated as such.
