If you’re putting a VPN on your Apple TV, you most likely have several other devices in your house that would benefit from a VPN too. Some providers make you pick and choose by enforcing a simultaneous device connection limit, but not Surfshark. You can cover as many devices as you want on one subscription.

4. Proton VPN – Strongest Privacy Story on Apple TV

Proton VPN sits at rank 4 because the privacy stack underneath does more work than the streaming layer. If your Apple TV does more than stream – log into Apple ID-linked services, run a Plex server from a Mac on the same network, or just keep your viewing metadata out of a Five Eyes jurisdiction – Proton is the call. Switzerland sits outside both Five Eyes and 9-Eyes, the apps are open-source, and the no-logs policy was confirmed in Securitum’s 2025 audit.

The tvOS build is deliberately minimal: Quick Connect and Preferred City on Connection, both designed for one-button operation on the remote. Secure Core, Proton’s flagship multi-hop routing feature, ships on the desktop and mobile clients but isn’t part of the tvOS app – if multi-hop matters to your threat model, you’ll need a Mac or iOS device on the same network running the full Proton client.

How to Set Up a VPN on Apple TV

tvOS 17 finally added native VPN support, so the install path is the same as any other tvOS app.

1. Pick a provider. All five above ship native tvOS apps, so all you need is a subscription from the VPN provider of your choice.
2. Update tvOS first. Open Settings > System > Software Updates and confirm you’re on tvOS 17 or later, because earlier versions don’t support the tunnel framework that VPNs need to connect.
3. Install from the App Store. Search the provider name on your Apple TV and install the app like you would any other.
4. Sign in and grant tunnel permission. Open the app, sign in, and approve the VPN configuration prompt the first time you connect. tvOS asks once on connection and remembers the permission after that.
5. Pick a server and connect. Use Quick Connect for the fastest auto-routed option, or pick a specific country if you’re chasing a streaming library, then hit connect on the remote.
