Surfshark stands out by offering servers across three Spanish cities: Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia. This multi-city presence improves routing speed if you’re in Spain, and boosts catalogue reliability if you’re abroad trying to access Spanish libraries.
Speed loss came in at 9.1% on our nearest-server test, the lowest figure across the five providers we tested for Spain. Those speeds held up consistently well when accessing RTVE Play and Mitele. One stumble: like several competitors, Surfshark had trouble with Atresplayer during our testing window.
Global streaming performance was stronger. Surfshark hit 100% across Netflix (including the UK and US libraries), Disney+, and HBO Max.

Proton VPN is headquartered in Switzerland, which sits outside the EU and beyond the Five/Nine/14 Eyes intelligence-sharing frameworks. That’s a meaningful jurisdictional advantage when Spain itself operates within the EU’s data-sharing orbit.
The apps are fully open-source, meaning the client code is independently auditable. Secure Core adds an extra privacy layer by routing traffic through a second hop in a privacy-friendly country before exiting, a feature worth enabling if you suspect your network is being filtered.
