Article Summary

  • Top pick for Turkey: NordVPN, best for bypassing restrictions in Turkey with servers in 225 locations worldwide
  • Best budget VPN: Surfshark, the least expensive long-term plan at $2.39/month
  • Best connection speed: ExpressVPN, only 6.8% speed loss and traffic obfuscation turns on automatically
  • The legal line: VPN use is not illegal in Turkey, but the government issues strict website and app blocks and uses deep packet inspection to support it
  • The obfuscation check: all five picks offer traffic obfuscation, which we have tested from the 30 VPNs on our books
Turkey has strong internet censorship policies. A lot of its content is also geographically restricted to this region. If you’re traveling outside of Turkey, you will likely see errors like this.
Streaming services and broadcasting agencies often restrict content to local viewers only. Losing access to platforms like beIN SPORTS can make you skip important matches.
We have tested the 5 best VPNs for streaming that bypass such blocks. We successfully unlocked beIN SPORTS in Turkey and the local TRT 1 streams. All our tested VPNs offer excellent connection speed for HD streams. We also verified firsthand that their obfuscated connection features work, which is necessary for the strict Turkish internet environment.

The Best VPNs for Turkey Reviewed

Here are our top picks with robust cybersecurity features and streaming capabilities. You can find more test results and proof screenshots afterward.

1. NordVPN: Best for Bypassing Restrictions

NordVPN launched a proprietary NordWhisper protocol in 2025. It is designed to avoid firewall detection and deep packet inspection, exactly what Turkish ISPs use to restrict online access. This protocol, like traditional obfuscation, disguises user traffic to make it look like simple HTTPS traffic without a VPN. However, it uses modern and up-to-date techniques, making it more compatible with current detection methods.
The speed drop was only 7.6%, which is well within the norms. It worked with both TRT1 and beIN SPORTS, which were unavailable from our original IP address. In addition to NordWhisper, you also get a list of obfuscated servers, including those in Turkey.
NordVPN runs a large network of 9,000 servers in 225 countries. That makes it the best choice for unblocking content within and outside of Turkey simultaneously. Keep in mind that you can’t participate in online activities that are illegal in Turkey, like sports betting. However, accessing a TV show in the US Netflix library does not pose any real risks.

2. Surfshark: Best Value for Price

Surfshark offers the best long-term pricing at $2.39. It handles obfuscation using its NoBorders feature, which is enabled by default. It also chooses the best server to bypass restrictions, but you can freely select another one for the desired geographical targeting.
We tested it by unblocking the TRT Sports channel on the Turkish tabii streaming network. The stream worked on the first try without any buffering or quality drops. Surfshark is one of two VPNs on this list (alongside IPVanish) that provide a fully developed antivirus. It was also verified by AV-Test.org, an independent antivirus research lab.
The speed drop was 9.2%, which is still above 200Mbps considering our baseline. With everything included, Surfshark offers great value for the price.

3. ExpressVPN: The Fastest VPN Connection

ExpressVPN was the fastest during our tests, retaining 93.2% of the original connection speed. It also has fully automatic traffic obfuscation. Obfuscation is built into every ExpressVPN server, so your traffic is disguised automatically, with nothing to switch on.
To check streaming, we accessed a football match on beIN SPORTS. We succeeded on the first try, and the quality was as good as ExpressVPN speed should deliver. This VPN offers six protocols to choose from.
Each protocol has different speeds and restriction evasion capabilities. You will also find an ad blocker, kill switch, and split tunneling features. ExpressVPN is actively branching out and now offers eSIMs, a password manager, and a private AI chatbot. The AI chatbot selling point is that it does not collect user data, which Cure53 already audited at the beginning of 2026.

4. IPVanish: Moderately Priced Choice

IPVanish offers traffic obfuscation, but only for the OpenVPN protocol. We went to stream beIN SPORTS, and it didn’t have any issues showing us a live match.
IPVanish is moderately priced and offers good value, costing $2.39. You will find a kill switch, IPv6, and DNS leak protection (that other VPNs on this list also offer), and an ad blocker. IPVanish also disables trackers and blocks access to malicious websites.
Another feature that we liked is the High Speed Mode. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with Scramble obfuscation, and without it, IPVanish had a 16.4% speed loss, the biggest on this list. On the other hand, it successfully unblocked several Netflix libraries during our worldwide tests, so it’s a good streaming VPN overall.

5. Proton VPN: Broad Customization Options

Proton VPN is the only one on the list with open-source applications on all devices. It also offers a genuinely free version to secure one device, with servers in five countries, chosen randomly.
Regarding streaming, it took us some time to get Proton VPN working. Its ad blocker kept interfering, making streaming sites unresponsive. We also had to switch to the Stealth protocol until we got the TRT Sports channel working.
The overall speed drop is 8.4%. Proton VPN lets you choose from nine protocols or picks one for you. Stealth protocol obfuscates traffic, and if it doesn’t work, there are two more that also offer censorship resistance.
Overall, Proton VPN has a wide range of online privacy features. However, for streaming, you may have to switch servers and turn off its ad blocker.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Turkish VPNs

We first looked for a traffic obfuscation feature. Human Rights Watch has just published an article warning of increasing internet censorship in Turkey. Using a VPN to unblock beIN SPORTS matches in this country does not pose significant risks. But without traffic obfuscation, you will see more and more VPN blocks.
We proceeded to check other mandatory cybersecurity features, like a working kill switch. We have already tested them by terminating the VPN connection in the middle of sessions and monitoring device traffic, typically pinging Cloudflare servers. We also checked for IP and DNS leaks, and skipped VPNs that did not pass the tests.
To test streaming capabilities, we chose beIN Sports and TRT streams, which are unavailable in our location. We connected to each VPN Turkey servers and marked the results, whether we were granted access on the first try or had to switch VPN servers and protocols to succeed.

Why You Need a VPN in Turkey: Censorship, Security & Streaming

Access restrictions in Turkey are routine. Blocking orders reach the network operators and are applied at the ISP level, and the same orders have at times been aimed at VPN services. Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority is where those orders come from. Simultaneously, Freedom House’s country report records that in November 2023 it ordered ISPs to block access to 17 VPN services.
Streaming is the same problem in a different form. You need a Turkish IP address to access its local streams from abroad. And servers worldwide to unblock the best libraries. We chose VPN services capable of both. During our previous tests, ExpressVPN struggled with UK Netflix, while IPVanish struggled with Netflix US and Amazon Prime Video. NordVPN, ProtonVPN, and Surfshark delivered excellent performance.
Trying selected VPNs with Turkish streaming sites provided great results. All of them granted access to content that is blocked in our location.
NordVPN effortlessly unblocked the TRT Sports stream on tabii streaming services.
Using ExpressVPN, we were able to stream beIN Sports, which was previously unavailable.
Surfshark also bypassed regional blocks on the first try.
IPVanish also worked well. Only ProtonVPN required changing servers and a VPN protocol and turning its ad blocker off. Afterward, it started streaming the desired content.
For journalists, researchers, and NGO staff working in-country, the stakes sit somewhere else entirely: a VPN keeps the network operator and the ISP from inspecting your online activities. However, it does not make you anonymous, and it changes nothing about what Turkish law permits. To understand more about how VPNs work, visit our online privacy guide that covers the rest.

How to Download and Use a VPN in Turkey

Whether you’re traveling outside of Turkey or arriving, subscribe to the VPN service beforehand. If you cannot access the chosen VPN domains from Turkey, try the following:
  1. Change your device’s DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.
  2. Try downloading the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  3. Try downloading the Tor browser to access the VPN domain.
After installing the VPN, look for the traffic obfuscation feature. NordVPN, Proton VPN, and IPVanish offer it in the protocol menu. Surfshark offers it in the VPN settings tab, in the bottom Advanced Security section. And ExpressVPN applies it automatically.
Enable traffic obfuscation and turn on the kill switch. Check our What is a VPN kill switch guide to learn more. We also have a guide on how we test VPNs to verify their safety.
As an example, we have turned on NordVPN’s firewall-based kill switch, which terminates all internet traffic outside of the VPN tunnel.
When we disconnected from the server, all pings to Cloudflare stopped, which means NordVPN prevents data leaks outside of its tunnel.
Here, the same happens with ProtonVPN’s kill switch.
All of our chosen VPNs provide obfuscation and kill switches, protecting your online privacy in a tightly censored region. We have verified firsthand that each one successfully connects to servers in Turkey using this feature.
Regarding connection speed, we have tested on a 251 Mbps download baseline.
Here are the results for each VPN:
1) NordVPN 231.79 Mbps; 2) Surfshark 228 Mbps; 3) ExpressVPN 234 Mbps; 4) IPVanish 210 Mbps; 5) ProtonVPN 230 Mbps.
Lastly, if you suddenly lose connection, try changing the server first. If that also does not work, change the VPN protocol to OpenVPN TCP. If the problem persists, try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data. You may be out of Wi-Fi range. And if you suspect your VPN does not work in Turkey at all, consider using its refund policy.
