If you’re looking for the cheapest VPN, Proton VPN’s one month, one year, and two year plans all start at a lower price than NordVPN’s equivalents.

Considering NordVPN is our best VPN overall and now comes with antivirus protection, this makes it the better value. This is particularly the case over two years where it’s just $3.49 a month, only slightly more than Proton VPN at $2.99.

Speed, Streaming, and Performance Comparison

Proton VPN and NordVPN are evenly matched for speed. Although we had a marginally faster connection via Proton VPN’s US West, EU, and Asia servers, NordVPN offered higher speeds on our nearest local server as well as via US East servers.

We didn’t suffer much speed loss with either VPN but it was NordVPN that performed best. We had just 10.68% speed loss from our baseline connection, compared to 17.56% with Proton VPN.

I’ve found the two VPNs’ speeds to be fast enough for bandwidth-heavy tasks including streaming. P2P is supported by both VPNs although only NordVPN permits torrenting on all servers.

Even when streaming in 4K, you won’t often encounter lag with Proton VPN or NordVPN. The two VPN services had a 100% success rate with region-locked streaming services, easily accessing the likes of Netflix and Prime Video in testing.

Server Coverage and Specialty Servers

Proton VPN and NordVPN have two of the largest server networks. However, Proton VPN offers more servers. With users spread across more servers, this reduces congestion during busy periods.

It’s NordVPN that offers more server locations however. This increases your odds of finding a server close to your physical location for the fastest speeds. It also provides greater flexibility for bypassing geo-blocking.

You’re not short of options when it comes to specialty servers. Both have Tor/Onion Over VPN, which let you access the Tor network without running the Tor browser separately.

Although both offer Dedicated IP addresses, Proton VPN limits these to business users. Proton VPN’s Secure Core servers and NordVPN’s Double VPN servers route traffic via two locations for an extra layer of encryption. Yet Proton VPN’s Secure Core servers pass traffic through privacy-focuses countries like Iceland and Switzerland first.

Security, Privacy, and No-Logs Policy

There’s little to separate Proton VPN and NordVPN when it comes to security. They operate out of privacy-friendly jurisdictions where they aren’t subject to mandatory data retention laws.

Depending on the VPN protocol you choose, your data receives ChaCha20 (WireGuard or NordLynx) or 256-bit AES (OpenVPN), both of which are uncrackable.

Both VPNs offer a kill switch and leak protection. We ran leak tests to make sure there wasn’t any identifying information such as our original IP address, location, or ISP’s name. Likewise, we force-closed our VPN connection to make sure the kill VPN’s respective kill switches cut our internet traffic. Both VPNs passed these tests with ease.

Proton VPN and NordVPN operate no-logs policies. In fact, their no-logs claims have been independently verified in multiple audits.

Where Proton VPN does have the edge is that its apps are open-source. The fact that anyone can freely inspect its code brings a higher level of transparency. It’s also the only one of the two providers to accept anonymous cash payment. That said, it’s possible to pay for NordVPN anonymously by purchasing a subscription box in a physical store in select countries.

Whether you choose Proton VPN or NordVPN, you’ll be able to secure all of your devices with ease. The two have user-friendly apps for all major operating systems, alongside convenient browser extensions.

I found downloading and installing the two to be straightforward. Their respective apps have received facelifts in the past year, feature useful quick-connect buttons, and make finding the right server simple.

If you want to get around their 10-device simultaneous connection limit, you have the option to manually configure a connection with a VPN-compatible router.
