PrivadoVPN Review: Budget VPN for Streaming in 2026

PrivadoVPN is one of the cheaper VPNs out there, but there’s no compromise on service. It’s actually a great budget option. Launched in 2019 by Swiss company Privado Networks AG, PrivadoVPN has quietly been making waves in the low-cost end of the market while other providers have been raising their prices.

Once you dig into PrivadoVPN’s features, you’ll see that its affordable pricing actually represents a lot of value. We’ll dive into the details in a moment, but a glance you should know your PrivadoVPN subscription includes:

At just $1.11/month on a 2-year plan, PrivadoVPN is one of the cheapest VPNs on the market. If you want strong security guarantees without breaking the bank, it’s hard to beat PrivadoVPN.

That said, PrivadoVPN isn’t perfect. Read on and we’ll break down everything you need to know about this budget VPN, as well as whether it can truly compete with the top-tier VPN market.

PrivadoVPN Overview

PrivadoVPN pricing starts at $1.11/month for a 2-year plan. If you just need a monthly subscription, it’s $10.99/month, which is roughly on par with the rest of the VPN industry.

The PrivadoVPN app uses AES-256-GCM encryption over OpenVPN. OpenVPN is one of the most well-tested VPN protocols on the market. It’s basically the gold standard for security, so no complaints there. PrivadoVPN also supports IKEv2/IPSec, and WireGuard, both of which are considered faster protocols. WireGuard is especially lightweight, which is why we’ve used it for our speedtests on Privado (more on that below).

We’re also pleased with the app interface. It’s clean and straightforward, so even if you’re a first time VPN user you’ll be able to get set up with PrivadoVPN in minutes, not hours.

As for the server network, PrivadoVPN’s is a little underwhelming compared to the top-tier VPN providers we’ve reviewed in the past. We’ve checked their app and found that PrivadoVPN spans hundreds of servers across 49 countries and 60 cities. That’s about average for the industry, but it’s smaller than VPNs with truly global reach like NordVPN or Surfshark.

There is a reason for this, though. PrivadoVPN exclusively uses physical servers instead of virtual ones, which should mean better speeds. It also, theoretically, makes it more difficult for streaming sites to recognize whether you’re using a VPN. Our own streaming tests were mixed, but we know that PrivadoVPN unblocked Netflix in multiple regions.

It’s also a great choice for torrenting. PrivadoVPN is one of the few VPN providers that include SOCKS5 proxies with your subscription. While SOCKS5 isn’t ideal for privacy, it’s the fastest option to change your IP while connecting to the internet. That’s great if you just need to hide your IP from other users on P2P connections. Of course, torrenting is fully supported on all of PrivadoVPN’s actual VPN servers too.

From a privacy perspective, PrivadoVPN is decent. Not excellent, but decent. Their privacy policy says all the right things about not logging your activity, plus hosting in Switzerland means that PrivadoVPN benefits from some rock-solid privacy laws. Plus, it’s outside the 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, and 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances. However, we really would like to see PrivadoVPN undergo a third-party audit in the future so we can be absolutely sure their no-logs policy is as good as it sounds.

PrivadoVPN Pros

1. A Great Free VPN Plan

Most VPNs that offer a free plan limit you with data caps. PrivadoVPN’s free plan is, simply put, different. Better, even. While the speeds do get capped after 10 GB/Month, you’ve got truly unlimited data.

You also have access to 13 server locations spanning North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Privado also ensures you’ll be safe even while using the free version, thanks to full AES-256 encryption on OpenVPN, as well as lightning fast connectivity through WireGuard. Plus, you have the same kill switch protection used in the paid plan.

Competitors like ProtonVPN limit their free users to 3 countries. Others throttle speeds from the moment you connect. PrivadoVPN gives you a genuinely useful product for free across multiple locations.

2. Physical Servers Only 

PrivadoVPN currently operates hundreds of servers across 49 countries and 60 cities, including popular locations like the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, France, Switzerland, Brazil, Singapore, and Japan. In the US alone, you can choose from servers in ten different cities, giving you a range of low-latency locations from both coasts to choose from.

Although PrivadoVPN is a budget provider, you wouldn’t be able to tell from their approach to servers. They use physical servers only. Many VPN providers use a mixture of physical servers and “virtual” servers, which are not located in the country they appear to be. So, if you connect to a virtual server near to you expecting low latency and high speeds, you might actually be connecting to a physical server on the other side of the planet.

Not only does this lead to slower speeds, but it can also mean you don’t get the unblocking capabilities you expect. Plus, if you’re particularly picky about privacy, you might end up connecting to a jurisdiction with privacy laws you don’t agree with.

PrivadoVPN’s servers are all located in the same country they appear to be from, which is great for streaming and P2P. It really shows that they take infrastructure quality seriously.

Plus, PrivadoVPN owns the data centers it operates its VPN from. That way, you don’t have to worry about third parties snooping on your VPN traffic.

3. Fast, Reliable Speeds

PrivadoVPN’s use of physical servers means that it provides great speeds, even if it is a budget VPN. This is partially down to supporting WireGuard, one of the fastest VPN protocols on the market.

Of course, we won’t tell you that PrivadoVPN is fast if we’re not certain. That’s why we’ve taken it for a test drive with our own 250Mbps testing rig.

It’s inevitable that a VPN will slow your connection down slightly compared to the speeds you get without one. That said, we generally look for below 20% speed loss across the board. PrivadoVPN performed very well by that metric, almost perfect marks.

We did notice our upload speed absolutely tanked when connecting to a server in Asia. Like, practically unusable speeds. However, that’s the only issue we have. Otherwise, PrivadoVPN performed perfectly. Normally, we’d be concerned about a result like 95+% upload loss but considering the rest of the results, we consider this an outlier.

All in all, PrivadoVPN is more than adequate for 4K streaming, fast browsing, and secure file transfers.

4. Solid Netflix & Streaming Support

If you’re buying a VPN, you probably expect it to be able to unblock streaming sites. PrivadoVPN works pretty well here too. Their marketing claims that the VPN can unblock multiple streaming services, so we put those claims to the test.

PrivadoVPN doesn’t use “streaming-optimized” servers. All you do is pick a server in the location you want and it takes care of the rest for you. That makes it fantastically easy to use, so our testing was a breeze.

First of all, we loaded up our HBO Max site and tried to stream The Hobbit. Most VPNs aren’t able to unblock HBO Max, so we were pleasantly surprised when PrivadoVPN worked first time. Let’s move on.

We were also able to access Disney Plus through PrivadoVPN’s US servers. Once again, easy as could be.

Now for the real test: Netflix. Netflix has been cracking down on VPNs across the board for a while, so it’s important to verify that the VPN you’re using can actually unblock Netflix even if they claim they can. Once again, PrivadoVPN worked.

Finally, we tried out Paramount Plus, another provider that’s been throwing up a lot of roadblocks for VPNs recently. PrivadoVPN worked perfectly.

We’re pretty impressed. PrivadoVPN unblocks plenty of streaming sites that other providers struggle with, so we’re satisfied that it’s a decent unblocking VPN.

5. Clean Interface and Practical Extra Features

PrivadoVPN has gone through a total app refresh and the results are fantastic. It’s a genuinely intuitive interface that is as simple to use as the top-tier VPNs. Even if you’re a first-time user, it’s simple enough to set up in a matter of minutes.

We could go on about how nice the interface is, but we feel pictures speak a thousand words. Plus, it’s a good excuse to show off some of PrivadoVPN’s features. So, let’s take a look!

Control Tower

PrivadoVPN’s Control Tower is a DNS-based threat management system. Basically, you pick the content you don’t want to see, and Control Tower blocks it before it ever appears on your computer. What makes Control Tower different from other threat management systems built into VPNs is the level of control you have over the content you block.

Most VPN providers do offer a DNS blocklist that keeps you from accessing malware sites. Control Tower lets you pick whether you want to restrict entire categories of content like gambling, cryptocurrency, and adult sites. That’s great if you’re relying on Control Tower to manage the content your kids can see on their devices.

Control Tower also does a great job of blocking phishing sites and malware distributors, as well as blocking invasive ad networks that profile your activity across different sites.

Control Tower operates quietly in the background and can be toggled on or off from within the app.

SmartRoute (Split Tunneling)

SmartRoute is PrivadoVPN’s name for split tunneling. Instead of running all of your apps through the VPN, SmartRoute lets you pick which apps will bypass the VPN and use your default internet connection. Pretty handy if you have a latency-sensitive application you’re running where privacy isn’t essential (or you just want to stream Netflix with your home library without turning the VPN off).

The actual operation is pretty easy. You just open the SmartRoute tab up inside the PrivadoVPN client, then add apps that you want to use your default application from the app picker. Every app you’ve added is clearly listed in the tab for quick reference, too.

The only downside is that SmartRoute is only available when you’re using IKEv2 on MacOS, but on Windows it’s available on all protocols. Plus, you can pick whether to exclude certain apps or only use the VPN with certain apps.

Kill Switch

PrivadoVPN, like most reliable VPNs, includes a kill switch. It’s just a feature that cuts your internet traffic if you lose connection to the VPN.

While that might sound inconvenient, it’s actually an essential privacy feature. Without it, you could be sending unencrypted traffic over your default network connection without realizing it. Maybe that’s not the worst thing in the world on your home connection, but you’ll be happy to have it if you’re using a public Wi-Fi network whether other users could be monitoring your traffic.

The kill switch is available on Windows, Android, and iOS (added in May 2025). You can toggle it directly from the main app interface or pick specific applications to be blocked when the VPN goes down.

We’ve also performed our own testing to make sure the kill switch works as expected, which you can see later along with the rest of our leak tests. For now, we’ll just say that: yes, it works.

SOCKS5 Proxy

PrivadoVPN includes a SOCKS5 proxy option which is ideal for torrenting. SOCKS5 is a separate protocol. It’s not a VPN, so it doesn’t encrypt your traffic. However, it does mask your IP address without all of the overhead of a VPN which results in better speeds. To get the most out of SOCKS5, you’ll need to enter the authentication details separately into your P2P client or you won’t get any benefits from it.

Once you do, every other user you interact with in the torrent swarm will only see your SOCKS5 IP address, not your home one. It’s best for situations where you need speed and an alternate IP, but aren’t super concerned about the actual privacy of your connection.

Privado Sentry

Introduced in 2024, Privado Sentry is an antivirus layer available on Android and Windows that provides real-time protection against malware and ransomware. It isn’t included in your Privado subscription by default: you’ll need to tick it as an optional add-on at checkout. For an extra $1.99/month it’s a decent anti-virus solution, but it’s worth pointing out that NordVPN offers a similar product in their base subscription.

Protocol Options

PrivadoVPN supports three main VPN protocols:

• WireGuard: Designed to offer better speeds than OpenVPN at the expense of compatibility.
• OpenVPN (TCP/UDP): Battle-tested with decades of use in the VPN industry but slower than WireGuard or IKEv2.
• IKEv2/IPSec: Handles constant reconnections between Wi-Fi and mobile data particularly well.

The app automatically selects the best protocol for your device, but you can manually choose from the settings menu at any time.

10 Simultaneous Devices

PrivadoVPN allows up to 10 devices simultaneously under a single paid subscription.

You can also configure PrivadoVPN on your router, protecting every device on your home network while only counting as one connection.

6. Unrestricted Torrenting on All Servers

PrivadoVPN allows P2P connections on all of its servers. All you have to do is pick the server location you want from the client app and Privado handles all of the connectivity for you. Plus, we’ve verified that the kill switch works so you won’t have to worry about exposing your real IP while torrenting if your connection to the VPN drops.

Having access to SOCKS5 proxies also gives you more flexibility when it comes to P2P than other VPN providers. If you prefer speed over privacy, you can load one of Privado’s SOCKS5 proxies onto your torrent client and get the fastest speeds possible.

7. No Leaks Found

We’ve heard plenty of claims from PrivadoVPN that they protect your IP through their VPN service, so we decided to put it to the test.

We loaded up PrivadoVPN and ran it through a series of programs designed to check whether the VPN client leaks your IP address.

First up, IPLeak.net. We used IPLeak.net to check whether PrivadoVPN leaks your IP through DNS. DNS is the address book for the internet, basically. Every time you look up a domain, a DNS request is sent to return the IP associated with the site. So, if your VPN doesn’t handle DNS requests correctly, your ISP can see which sites you’re visiting, and other DNS providers can see your real IP.

As a side-note, you’ll notice that the IPv6 test didn’t work. That’s because PrivadoVPN blocks IPv6 traffic, which is known to leak your real IP address even through a VPN.

While the results were slightly concerning at first, we decided to double-check using BrowserLeaks.com. We saw that all of these DNS servers are from the same ISP, so we’re reasonably happy that your DNS requests are only being routed through PrivadoVPN’s servers.

Next up, we used BrowserLeaks.com to test whether WebRTC leaks your IP while connected to PrivadoVPN. For reference, WebRTC is a protocol that allows browsers to talk directly to each other. It’s known to sidestep VPNs when the client is set up incorrectly, but PrivadoVPN correctly handles WebRTC. Basically, it doesn’t leak your IP.

Finally, we checked out PrivadoVPN’s kill switch. We disconnected the VPN and tried to send traffic out from our testing device, but we couldn’t access any internet services. So, PrivadoVPN’s kill switch works correctly.

 

8. Headquartered in Switzerland

Where your VPN provider is headquartered matters just as much as where they operate. PrivadoVPN is operated by Privado Networks AG, a Swiss company registered in Zug. Switzerland has a reputation as being widely regarded as one of the best possible jurisdictions for a VPN provider (although that could be changing).

Switzerland is not a member of the EU but has equivalent data protection laws to GDPR thanks to Switzerland’s Federal Act on Data Protection. It’s also outside the 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, and 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances, making it a strong jurisdiction for users who want privacy protections without being directly under EU enforcement, where GDPR violations have already led to over 2,245 fines.

PrivadoVPN’s policy explicitly states it does not log browsing activity, IP addresses, connection timestamps, or DNS queries tied to VPN sessions. Even if they were asked to hand over data related to a PrivadoVPN user, Switzerland’s laws shield all but the most serious of requests. If their no-logs policy is true, PrivadoVPN would have nothing to hand over anyway.

9. Thorough Knowledge Base

PrivadoVPN has an extensive self-service help center with topics that cover everything from app setup guides to email relays, SOCKS5 setup, and how its anti-virus works. It is a little hard to navigate and we found that most of the time, you’re better off just using the search bar instead of looking through PrivadoVPN’s help categories manually. PrivadoVPN offers setup tutorials for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, AndroidTV, Fire TV, as well as router configurations.

However, PrivadoVPN does not currently offer live chat support. If you need live support, you need to open a support ticket by sending an email. They claim that this is 24/7 support, but generally Privado will take a few hours to respond to you ticket.

10. Strong Third-Party Ratings

Apple App Store

PrivadoVPN has a Apple App Store rating of 4.1 stars with 655 reviews. That’s decent, but it’s not enough reviews to truly tell whether the iOS product is good or not.

Google Play Store

The Android app has fairly mediocre reviews at 3.5 stars after 10.8k reviews. Again, not amazing, but PrivadoVPN’s Android client has come a long way.

Trustpilot

Privado also has fairly mediocre reviews on Trustpilot with 3.3 stars after 2,380 reviews.

11. AES-256 Encryption

PrivadoVPN uses AES-256-GCM encryption. That’s the same standard recommended by the NSA for securing classified information and used by banks, governments, and cybersecurity agencies worldwide. This level of encryption is computationally infeasible to brute-force with current technology.

Beyond encryption, PrivadoVPN’s security architecture includes:

• Kill switch: prevents data leaks if the VPN connection drops
• DNS leak protection: forces all DNS queries through PrivadoVPN’s own servers
• WebRTC leak protection: prevents browser-level IP exposure
• No-logs policy: no activity data, IP addresses, or timestamps are stored
• Physical servers only: no virtual server shortcuts that could compromise transparency

PrivadoVPN Cons

1. Smaller Server Network Than Top-Tier Rivals

PrivadoVPN’s physical server policy has a serious downside. While we’ve seen that they provide a high-speed service, there are plenty of other VPN providers out there that offer similar speeds and have over double the number of countries to connect to. This isn’t too much of a problem if you just need servers in Europe and America, but Privado is particularly lacking in Africa and the Middle East.

2. No Live Chat Support

Unlike NordVPN and ExpressVPN, PrivadoVPN does not currently offer 24/7 live chat support. You have two choices if you want support: either check out the FAQ section and hope your problem is handled there, or send an email to their support staff to raise a ticket. We’ve found that generally Privado responds fairly quickly, but that’s not terribly reassuring if your VPN connection is down and you need it resolved ASAP.

3. Lacks an “X-Factor”

PrivadoVPN is cheap and functional. However, if you’re not using their SOCKS5 proxies regularly and you don’t care about the fine-grained control that Control Tower offers over which sites you’re able to access, there’s not much else to distinguish PrivadoVPN from the rest of the market.

It is a great budget VPN, and it’s certainly value for money, but there’s so much that providers like NordVPN offer with their default subscription now that PrivadoVPN looks a little anemic by comparison.

4. No Widely Published Independent Privacy Audit

This is a big one for us. PrivadoVPN’s no-logs policy clearly states that they don’t log your IP or your internet traffic, which is good. It’s also good that their stance is clearly grounded in Swiss law, which protects privacy rights pretty robustly. What’s… less good is that there’s no independent third-party audit of its no-logs claims.

What this means is that while PrivadoVPN says all of the right things, there’s no external verification that they’re not logging your IP. If you’re really concerned about your privacy, you want to stick to a VPN that’s been extensively vetted by a third party. NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN have all invested heavily in showing that their no-logs policies are 100% true.

PrivadoVPN is a great budget VPN. It combines strong AES-256 security, a genuine no-logs policy backed by Swiss law, unrestricted P2P support, and a clean, user-friendly interface.

As for technical features, you get 10 simultaneous devices, WireGuard speeds, Control Tower ad & malware blocking, SmartRoute split tunneling and SOCKS5 proxies for torrenting.

The free plan alone makes PrivadoVPN worth checking out. It’s very rare to see a VPN that gives you a wide selection of servers to choose from without spamming you with ads, and the unlimited data guarantee is pretty cool. You will find yourself running out of unthrottled data pretty quickly, though.

However, if you’re looking for a VPN that goes above and beyond to protect your data, or you need truly global reach, PrivadoVPN just won’t be appropriate.

If you are going to buy PrivadoVPN, we recommend you go with the 2-year plan. It’s easily the best value for money, but you should be aware that it’s an introductory offer. Even after the price jump, it’s still pretty affordable, but it throws the value proposition of PrivadoVPN out of the window.
