ExpressVPN’s case for Brazil rests on its proprietary Lightway protocol. Maybe you’re a business traveler landing in São Paulo and sizing up the hotel Wi-Fi. Maybe you’re on mobile data outside the major cities, watching your signal dip. Or perhaps you’re thinking ahead to the next time WhatsApp or Telegram gets blocked.

4. Proton VPN, Censorship-Resilience Pick
Proton VPN earns its spot for readers whose priority is censorship resilience over streaming unlocks (though it’s no slouch in the latter department either).
If a future Telegram or WhatsApp ban weighs heavier in your mind than the next Globo premiere, the architecture Proton VPN provides makes sense. Proton VPN is headquartered in Switzerland which operates outside the Five, 9, and 14 Eyes surveillance alliances, and entirely outside Brazilian jurisdiction.
Proton VPN’s no-logs policy was independently audited by Securitum in 2025. The apps are open-source, meaning the client code is publicly auditable. As for streaming access, Proton VPN had a 100% record against multiple Netflix libraries (including the US), BBC iPlayer, and Paramount+. A word on speed. Our Proton test ran through a Rio de Janeiro server on the IKEv2 protocol rather than São Paulo on WireGuard, and it showed: throughput dropped 34.9% from baseline (584 Mbps down from 897 Mbps). That is the slowest result here, but it is not a like-for-like comparison with the WireGuard-based São Paulo tests above, and switching to WireGuard on a closer server narrows the gap considerably.

5. IPVanish, Restrictive-Network and High-Device-Count Pick
IPVanish shines in two specific scenarios: if you’re dealing with networks that actively filter VPN traffic, or if your household demands more simultaneous connections than competitors allow.
Its default-on Scramble obfuscation masks VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helpful in Brazil where schools, offices, or even ISPs recognize and throttle standard VPN protocols.
